Best RPG Ever? Xenogears

To Level off my Anti Sony Bias

I wanted to Start a Thread one of the best RPGs I've ever played.

That's Xenogears. A little EVA a little Chrono Trigger A little Relgion. One of the best stories ever created for an RPG. And the Score by Yosunori Mituda is just awesome.

Anybody care to comment on the Adventures of Fei and Shitan?

I have it and loved it. But I everytime I try to finish it I end up buying and playing another game. I dont know why. Great RPG imo. The combo system was fun to use and made it more interesting since you dont just sit and watch, you get to interact with the battles. So far my favorite part is when you are in jail and then you escape into the sewer.

I loved Xenogears, and it's onw of my favorite RPGs, but I don't think it is the best RPG ever.

I think Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI would vie for that title. (Though Chrono Trigger gets my vote).

You forgot to mention if it's the best RPG for all time, or on playstation. If we're talking best RPGs of all time on any system, the list would be slighlty different. (this is a bit in random order as I remember them.)

* Ultima Underworld 2 (PC)
* Baldur's Gate (PC) (the entire series, as it's really just one story)
* Final Fantasy X (PS2)
* Final Fantasy X-2 (PS2)
* Fable (XBOX)
* Fable: Lost Chapters (PC) (not quite out yet, but making a great game better can't go wrong.)  :D
* Might & Magic VI (PC)
* Ultima 7: The Black Gate (PC)
* Ultima 7 part 2: The Serpent Isle (PC)
* Star Ocean: Till the End of Time Director's Cut (PS2) (the DC is the bug-free US version).
* Final Fantasy 5 (SNES)
* Secret of Mana (SNES)
* Secret of Mana 2 (SNES)
* Lufia (SNES)
* Lufia 2 (SNES)
* Legend of Zelda 3: A Link to the past (SNES) (not a true RPG, but still excellent) (ironic sub-title these days, though.)

And why no xenogears? Never played them.  ::)

Okay. This wasnt a best of topic, it was to see if anybody else played and liked xenogears. The topic starter said that it was one of the best RPG's "he's" played. But I like the list that you made.

it was a solid rpg. loved the music too
still, tough to compete with the golden age of rpg's on the snes ^_^
though my favorite of all time is b/w ff tactics and front mission 3 :p

yes.... it was one of my favourite rpg of all time.. the era of rpg was on psx...as for now it had already ended..

xenogears is tied as my fave rpg with vandal hearts 2!!! :D
vh2 is my fave game overall probably :)
the best old skool are obviously ff6 and chrono trigger!!! ::D

OMG! You people are like smoking or something! Final Fantasy VII is by far the best RPG of all-time! I'd have to say one of the longest as well, nothing can compare with the characters, storyline, and the battle system its just all too great for a game. Nightwolf, I see you mentioned FFX, I hated that game! Mainly because Tidus was just a faggot and the whole game was basically a movie to me, I actually felt like I was basically watching a DVD movie instead of actually playing the game, too many cut-scenes for me. I think the FF seris basically ruled the RPG genre, what other seris can compete with the FF seris? Zelda? Pfft...

That is exactly how I feel when I play FFX. The first time I played the game I was really impressed, but then sitting there watching them talk for 20 minutes and not actually doing much playing, I got a little bored. FFX is still a great game IMO, I need to replay this game sometime and get a little farther then last time....

How can you complain about FFX's over movie-ness in comparison to the Xenogears pseudo-prequel Xenosaga? It's nice that someone decided to try and explain Xenogears' past, but soooo much movie-ness.....

I've never even played Xenogears and I wasn't comparing it either, I was just stating that FFX is a movie game instead of actually a game. Well I think I played a demo verison of Xenogears but I dont remember how the game went at all..so long ago. Another good RPG is Grandia II for DC, I think its on PS2 as well.

Edit: Omg, I totally forgot to mention Parasite Eve! Now that's a good RPG, even though I never beat the game...I wish I had it a little longer to really get into it. That's going to be a retro game that I need to go and get. *saves money*

Parasite Eve is an awesome game. I loved the science aspect the most... that and the gross mutations of the rat and then the end boss sequence. Too bad Parasite Eve II wasn't that good.
