Bioshock...............Movie!!

From http://boards.ign.com/bioshock/b24141/163609539/p1/

Summary: IGN first speculated about the possibility of a BioShock movie, based on 2K's best-selling videogame, back in August. Then rumors began to circulate that Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy helmer Guillermo del Toro was involved. He flatly denied the reports, and the buzz quickly died. Now, however, the project is officially underway with other director, Pirates of the Caribbean's Gore Verbinski, in charge. Read Full Article

It's not Uwe Boll, so it actually has a chance.

PotC director though? I didn't see that coming. This may actually be good...

This was confirmed several months ago actually.

True.

Though that report had no word on who was writing the script, or who was directing it.

Apparently this one has both a good script writer and a good director.

Unfortunately, that doesn't mean it will be great. I can just see them missing most of their chances.

I would contest the good director part. When your best work is Pirates of the Caribbean, you aren't exactly a high-quality director. =P

How so? PotC (and its sequels), as well as The Ring, are two very popular films...

I respectfully disagree. PotC is a very popular and loved trilogy.

I don't care about popularity, to be honest. The first one was a reasonably good summer action-comedy, but certainly wasn't anything fantastic, and that was by far his best movie, IMO. The next two PotC movies and the Ring were all mediocre to bad. That doesn't exactly make him reputable, in my mind, especially considering I was hoping for depth in the Bioshock movie.

i agree with the ring but still wouldn't that be an opinion? because in my own opinion pirates of the caribbean are great..... but i see where you are going though.

Yes, that entire thing was meant to be my opinion, actually.

Except that popularity is the only thing that matters with entertainment.

The Ring being bad is pretty much fact.

So winning the Saturn Award must mean it's widely considered to be a bad film? Mmkay.

Yes, movie-making is about making money but a director isn't fantastic, solely because they made a cookie-cutter summer blockbuster that made 300 million dollars. In short, I don't have to think highly of the guy just because his movies make money.

I didn't like the second or third PotC movies, but I attributed that to a bad script more than a bad director...

A director has absolute control over how the scenes are filmed, and some control in how they flow, but if you didn't like the PotC movies because of their content, that has very little to do with the director. If he was a writer/director/producer of those films, then yes, you can blame him for their content.

PotC was filmed very well. Whether or not you liked the movies doesn't mean he failed direct them properly. If you have an issue with the actor's/actresses's performance or feel the framing, lighting, staging, mise-en-scene, and so forth were not appropriate to the material or were visually boring, then you'd be well advised to stay away from a Bioshock movie directed by him.

His involvement in The Ring gives me great confidence in his ability to make a scene scary, a necessity for a Bioshock movie. I really think this guy could add a lot to a Bioshock movie, and is an incredible asset to a videogame movie.

I guess I would agree with you and attribute how bad the last two PotC movies were to a bad script and story more than I would bad direction, and I will admit that the Pirates movies have good cinematography. You have a point here, in that the director doesn't control the content of what he directs, only how that content is presented. That being said, I don't feel he necessarily did an exceptional job with the content that was given to him. While I can't necessarily blame him for any movies he was involved in in the past that weren't very good, he certainly hasn't done anything to make me think of him as a great director.

I as well would agree with that. I would consider him great in the sense that he has directed several hollywood blockbuster films, essentially the highest level of film making one can aspire to. But compared to other directors of that caliber he is about average, neither exceptionally good nor exceptionally bad. It's just nice to see a director who doesn't have several strikes against them taking an interest in a video game film. Let's face it, he's a big step up from Uwe Boll, no matter how bad PotC was. :lol
