...about game-based movies."

At a panel discussing the crossover between movies and games held during the final day of the Design Innovative Communicate Entertain gaming summit, "Gladiator" writer David Franzoni issued a battery of constructive criticism about how games are written. Meanwhile "Doom" producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura called on hard-core gamers to lighten up about game-based movies.

Interesting. What do you guys think? Read the full article here:

Not only gamers, but people in general should heed his advice. It seems to me that when someone makes a movie based on a videogame, then gamers get all bent out of shape because something is different. And if someone makes a videogame based on a movie, it's seemingly discounted just because the movie came first. Some get mad because the game doesn't follow the storyline exactly. But never realize that if the game did that, then it would have 20 minutes of gameplay and 2 hours of monologue. Exciting!!

Bottom line is some people are too overly critical of entertainment.

Couldn't agree more.

Imho, they need to stop. Every single movie based on a game is a stinker. Surprises me how Mortal Kombat made it....I thought it could have been written better by a 3rd grader with crayola drawings or someone at newgrounds.com could have done a superb job.

The only person who needs to lighten up, is people who think they can translate a videogame story into a big screen idea. It never works, games they pick have no depth, some games already explain the story. Why try to push it? Are movies hurting that bad for ideas?

Gamers get bent out of shape, because everyone knows the patten. They know it's gonna suck. Name one good video game based movie that was worth watching besides Mortal Kombat, Final Fantasy Spirits Within (couldn't stand it, but arguable), and Resident Evil (I hated RE the movie(s) yet some enjoyed it)

Street Fighter the Movie
Double Dragon the movie
DOOM the Movie
Resident Evil
Resident Evil Apocalypse
Dead or Alive the Movie
Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat Annihilation
Super Mario Bros. the Movie
Final Fantasy Spirits Within
Alone in the Dark
Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider 2
House of the Dead
House of the Dead 2
Wing Commander

I'll lighten up when these movies stop sucking so bad....

The only movie based on a video game that is still legendary....is Disney's TRON and it was using Atari graphics man...I mean COME ON! They can't get a 3D game right into a movie, but if it's Space Invaders then it's gold?? Makes no sense to me...

I actually liked the first RE movie. I hated the cliched team of marines they sent in, but I thought it was still a pretty good movie. And Final Fantasy was cool too, despite some not-so-great VO...

What I don't understand is why movies feel they have to add in hollywood cliches to make the game plots into movie plots. There are games that exist where the plots are amazing, if movie makers could simply keep the story and display it on the big screen with real people I think they'd be sitting on a gold mine. I think the game-to-movie adapters also underestimate gamers in general. Honestly I feel like my intelligence drops a little when I watch movies like Mortal Kombat and Tomb Raider. It's like they took the story from those games and ran it through a "over-the-top excuse for action" machine where stuff just happens because it looks cool.

I don't really know if I'm making sense anymore, but I just think with videogames there is an untapped potential to churn out some really good movies, but everyone's too busy trying to make a quick buck to make a good movie.

I liked the Doom movie. I bought it the day it came out and saw it in theaters.

He is right. Lighten up.

I liked all of those movies. Super Mario Bros, classic! FF was only unpopular because it didn't really correllate to any of the games.

No he's wrong. He needs to Lighten up and let go of trying to create something that shouldn't be meant to be toyed with. He's like Dr. Frank....never play god....never try to make something new or better if the formula isn't broken or incorrect...

Stop wasting money! Save the whales! Shoot the producers!

I have to agree that Hollywood is in the wrong here. Most of the game based movies that are released are really bad even if they werent video game based movies. Overall Hollywood movies have been sucking lately and it's not just video game based movies. Honestly, I think they only way to make a successful movie is to use the existing storyline and make it continue the timeline and bridge gaps between games.

After seeing House Of The Dead, i lost all hope, and then i saw House Of The Dead2 and lost all hope that had started to regain...and exaclty as Ghost N Goblins said
i'll lighten up when they stop sucking
