No wonder it was canned.. ... it looks better (at only 25% done) than what SquareEnix can seem to do at 100% :lol

post up your opinions :)

no hating on square :)

you have to admit (looking at the trailers and screens) that is 1 heck of a game for only 25% done... .

I think Square was just jealous that someone had the, excuse the language here, balls to actually put effort into remaking a classic game instead of just porting it to other systems with no changes at all except for a few very short anime sequences.

Squaresoft puts very little effort into porting a SNES game to the PSX, and then watches the profits come in. Some fans take the same game and put a whole lot of effort into making the same completely 3D, and then Square attacks them with "legal action."

Sqaure can bite me...

That does look really awesome. Is it my imagination or did they use cel-shading? I'm a huge sucker for cel-shading.... :D

It seems after years of looking the other way, Square Enix has changed its policy on independently-created games honoring their own.
Michael "TYP" says: Either someone has something up his butt, or Square Enix has suddenly decided to start a project remarkably similar for the PSP or PS2.

I think that will end up being important. Perhaps we will see Chrono Trigger on the PSP or DS.

It will probably be a new version of Chrono Trigger. Square has not produced anything descent in years. Regardless of their lack of quality titles, the only thing I have ever desired from them is a GBA version of Final Fantasy III. Yet, they are willing to put the worst two games in the series FF 1 and 2 on both the Playstation and GBA.

Honestly, after the Enix merger, they just went completely off the cliff.

I would like to see Chrono Trigger ported, but only because we never CT over here. Heck, i'd even buy a PSP if they ported it.

Ah - you mean like when they ported FF 1 and 2 and completely updated the graphics and sound?

There is a huge difference between upgrading the graphics of an NES game to early SNES standards, and taking a 2D SNES game and making it completely 3D with graphics better than that of PSX games. So I would say yes, Square didn't put the same kind of effort into their product.

This isn't the only title either, with the Final Fantasy IV-VI PSX "remakes," all that Square did was add FMV intros and endings that were worse in quality than those in Final Fantasy VII (which as you know was a very early PSX game). If you don't believe me, watch the airship intro to FF IV, and then watch any one of the video segments in FF VII.

It becomes obvious here that Square is tyring to get as much money out of as little work as possible.

And game remakes are lame. I don't care how old the game is - 5, 10 or 20 years.

You make a good point, that actually helps show that Square is just trying to "cash-in" on old products. The fan made game was free for the player, and would have looked much nicer than Square's attempts at remaking games. There are many, many gamers who wanted to see a 3D remake of Chrono Trigger, and when some of those fans got together to make that a reality, they should not have been struck down by Square.

eh you people bash remakes too much. you know much the old snes carts go for? more than the psx remake when it was new. and c'mon, yeah some of the cg were not that good, but the ffII intro was cool. sword to the face ya know
plus many people didn't really get into final fantasy's until VII
and the magus looks no good in that pic, chrono is okay though

It's trendy to bash Squeenix because they don't produce for Nintendo now.

You're just making stuff up now. Square hadn't been making anything for Nintendo since way back in SNES days. That was, what? 9 years ago? I'm pretty sure all of the "trendy" Nintendo-fan-Square-bashers got over it a long time ago.

Oh, and in case you missed the news, Square does make games for Nintendo now, which makes your entire statement a fallacy...

I actually agree with Neph on this issue. Square bashing is popular since they don't make games for Nintendo systems, just like Nintendo fanboys hate Rare now that Microsoft owns it.

You'd be surprised at how long hardcore Nintendo fanboys can hold a grudge. :\

A lot of people were disappointed that Square Enix made Crystal Chronicles instead of a "true" Final Fantasy, so a lot of people still bash Squeenix for not making "true" FF games for the GC. Their argument: "Why does Squeenix give us this crappy connectivity game while the PS2 gets FFXII?"

At what point does someone stop being a gamer and become a "fanboy?" It isn't just fans of "Nintendo only" products that express disscontent with some of Square-Enix's games. There are many, many Square games that I have loved over the years, so the few dissapointing games tarnish this otherwise great company. Should Square be held to a higher standard than any other RPG making companies? I would have to say yes. Afterall, they were the ones who brought us such classics as Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, and the Final Fantasies. To see this "great innovator of RPGs" bringing half hearted remakes of old games to other systems is just annoying. Square could put a huge ammount of effort into making those games better, but would rather just rush them to store shelves to make a quick profit... The same with the Final Fantasy games which have practically been the same exact game since VIII with "better" graphics in each installment. I actually think X was a step back in the series, and although it is a great RPG by any standards, Square has done the same thing better in earlier installments.

I am only pointing out what I see as flaws in a good company. It is the people who wish to pretend that Square-Enix can do no wrong that I can't understand.

And now that all of these replies have gotten way off of the original topic, I will restate my initial point; which is to say that it was wrong for Square to can this fan-made Chrono Trigger project.

Interesting...

Anywho, I liked Chrono Trigger, a lot, and I don't like many RPG's. I for one would love to see it ported over to the GC. I can see Neph shaking his head already, but understand this. I no longer have a Super Nintendo, I never owned Chrono Trigger, I could never find it to buy anywhere. Sure I could always go on the internet and get both, but the fact of the matter is that I have a new(er) functioning Gamecube, and it would be great o play old classics on it, because it works, and will work for a long time. I don't want any updated graphics, I don't want any new gameplay ideas, I want the game I played when I was a little kid, nothing fancy, or new, just pure nostalgia.

Plus it was one fo the greatest games ever, it would be nice to play an "untainted" version.

As for the Squeenix bashing thing... I for one resented the fact that Crystal Chronicles was the first Square game on a Nintendo Console in over how ever many years it was. Why? Well, pretty much what Mai said. I probably wouldn't have played whatever Square made (aside from an untainted port of Seiken Densetsu 3) but the fact that they made a kiddy looking cutesy dumbed down RPG that required the use of GBA's for controllers was just insulting. I was just thinking "what, you expect us to buy this thing just BECAUSE this is the first Square game on a Nintendo console in however many years? Gimme a break...". I never really liked Square in the first place (or Rare even, aside from CBFD) but even if I had I'm sure Crystal Chronicles would have made me change my mind in a hurry.

How can they have gone off the cliff when the Squeenix merger was only about a year ago? (Maybe year and a half?)

A year? If I recall, FF IX was made by Square-Enix, and FF IX was published in 2000. I believe this merge has lasted longer than you think.

I hear mixed reviews over the new Star Ocean. Perhaps Enix would've been much better off.

The only thing that bothers me about Square Enix is that the Final Fantasy series is so big that other rpgs and rpg series don't always get the credit they deserve. I didn't even know Namco made rpgs until I learned about Tales of Symphonia, and that's probably because when you tell people that you like rpgs and that you have a PS2, everyone's first suggestion is all of the PSone and PS2 Final Fantasy games. Nevermind that there's tons of other quality rpgs series' like Dark Cloud, Shadow Hearts, Suikoden, Tales of Destiny, Lunar, etc. that have had games on the PSone and PS2.

I just looked at the screenies, and that game looks incredibly awesome.

Wish Square never forced them to stop such a great project...
