Halo 2 already leaked

October 14, 2004 - Less than a month before Microsoft releases the most anticipated game on Xbox this year, a pirated version of Halo 2 was alledgedly leaked onto piracy sites and newsgroups late last night (October 13).


Microsoft said it's launched an investigation into the leaked code, and issued this statement: "Microsoft has learned that a version of Halo 2 has been posted to various newsgroups and Websites. We consider downloading this code or making it available for others to download as theft."

While Microsoft has yet to identify the whereabouts of the person or persons who pirated the massive data file, the illegally pirated code, which apparently is a PAL version in French text, may have been leaked during the localization process in Europe. Infringement for copyright violations, in this case, downloading illegal software, subjects the perpetrator to a maximum penalty of $100,000.

"We consider downloading this code or making it available for others to download as theft," said the company in a statement. "We are currently investigating the source of this leak with the appropriate authorities. Microsoft takes the integrity of its intellectual property extremely seriously."

Bungie posted a small update on its site expressing its sorrow and distaste for the practice, as well as asking for help from the community. "Anyone who has information regarding the leak of the game or individuals or websites promoting the download of these illegal files is asked to please contact us by sending email to piracy@microsoft.com or calling 1-800-RULEGIT," the site reads.

I hope whoever leaked it gets caught. >:( If any of you download it and brag about it, don't be surprised if you get in trouble.
 
Yup, I just saw this on gamespot and I was shocked! I hope the perp gets busted and gets a hefty fine.
 
Yeah, I noticed that Halo CE map websites have been posting warnings about the beta version of Zanzibar that some have downloaded. I'm glad the users of CE have been asking the people to shut down those servers.

There's still maps that are from Halo 2 though, such as New Mombasa (I believe) and there's other maps with Halo 2 weapons in them.
 
So... is it actually available for D/L then?

Actually... I agree... I hate it when people "leak" games. It really spoils it... and its just not cool for the company.

I don't dislike it because they get to play it first......I just don't think they have any right to steal Bungie's hard work for free.
 
I have been waiting for like a year and a half to play Halo 2. Waiting until the legitimate street date of Nov. 9 isn't going to make a difference. So it's not that I'm mad that they got to play it first and I haven't played it. It's an issue of integrity. Whether it's a huge game like Halo 2 or Half-Life 2 or a small game, pirating is wrong, period. I agree with Spartan.

I just don't think they have any right to steal Bungie's hard work for free.

The only people who can really play the leaked version are people who understand French that have a heavily modded PAL Xbox

Not a whole lot, but hackers are probablly finding out more and more each day.
 
I've actually seen the leaked Halo 2 on several IRC channels in the last few days..its amazing how fast these things travel the internet. You couldn't pay me to download it even if I could play it though..risky business I think. ::D
 
I've seen someone play it and they're still going to pay for the full version, have it preordered I think, actually. They just wanted to check it out because they could.
