laptop hard drive

My girlfriend's laptop has an older 2.5" 5,400 rpm HDD in it. The computer isn't a gaming machine, but is often used for streaming video (hulu, netflix) and basic internet browsing.

Due to the cost and the problems with migration from HDD to SSD, I do not know if the solid state route would be worth the upgrade.

Then again, between a 7,200 rpm HDD and an SSD, the solid state drive would be faster, put out less heat, use less battery life, and be more shock resistant.

Any suggestions on which route to take for upgrading the laptop drive?

They definatly are faster. In my opinion the price vs. performance doesn't merit upgrading for the sake of upgrading. If the original hard drive is bad then I'd consider it.

The hard drive isn't "bad", but it is definitely slow.

Also, the laptop has been having heat issues. I was thinking an SSD would be a good place to cut heat and increase performance.

I think it would be better to just save the money and put it towards a new laptop. If it's having heat issues, I don't think an SSD is going to make a significant difference in that department. Your HD is already running at 5400 RPM. I'm pretty positive the heat it produces is not contributing to your overall problem.

then you should go with the SSD the only problem with an SSD is that it has a limited hard drive space like the maximum SSD capacity in the market was 120gb plus it's expensive but really worth the upgrade. I've used an SSD for a month now on my desktop used in only as a boot up and the second hard drive would be the storage.
