nintendo's position in the industry

As you are all very well aware of, there is a lot of misinformation around about nintendo's success in teh industry. the majority of people are under the belief they are iin "last" because they sold the fewest units (ironically forgetting about handheld sales). on this same hand, youve got people who say things like nintendo is "for kids" and the likes because apperantly, to them all that exists on gamecube is kirbys air ride and pikmin (which btw is cool). I have heard people actually saying that nintendo may "go the way of sega and fall out of hardware and just make software". Well, those are all proposterous claims. Dont know if its allready mentioned, but i guess a bit of reitteration never hurt anybody, so i'll list a few facts.

FACT: Although nintendo does, but a substantial amount, maintain the fewest number of console units sold - they have for over 2 decades, consistantly outsold their competitors in software (where money is really made).

FACT: Nintendo's intellectual property alone is worth more then microsofts or sonys video game divisions each... combined.

FACT: Nintendo has investors from broker firms abroad considering them a pending "boom". more specifically, merril lynch sayed on the record that "third party developers will flock to the Wii".

FACT: Nintendo is worth more then Ford or GM, at a current market value of $28 billion. (i stated this in another thread, sorry for the reitteration).

FACT: The nintendo DS is exceeding all expectations, and trampling the PSP in sales with a ratio of 3:1, and an even greater ration with their software.

Now, I sound like a serious nintendo a**-smoocher im sure, which i suppose is fine, i just wanted to get some of this off my chest. I dont know about you guys, but when i hear some spoilt, know-it-all little punk kid brat without a clue that cocks his neck and puts on a smug grin and pompously bad-mouths nintendo, it irritates me, and the biggest reason why is because most of what comes out of their mouth is a bunch of bogus garbage. Although this thread is probably not news to many of you, it is great to be armed with some of these facts next time you hear somebody say something dumb like that.

so next time, when someone sais "nintendos in last place! They'll end up making software for the big X and S" you can say "uhm, actually nintendo maintains the largest market value in the industry, leaving sony a bite only a quarter the size that they are". or next time someone sais "the wii is going to flop" you can mention that there are several banks and tons of investors (all who know more about the market than they do) putting millions of dollars into a company that they foresee as growing significantly and gaining huge marketshare.

heres a graph of nintendo's market value, you can see between 03 and 04 there being in a recession, but most importantly, you can see that in the past year alone they have more than doubled! A large majority of that is thanks to the (wonderful) DS. Wait till the Wii is released, they will soar, and the following years will only offer more improvements.

I won't argue with any of your facts, because they all are more or less just that, facts. As this board as seen many topics discussing the facts you presented, there is little else to say. And I don't think anyone here really believes that Nintendo is going to go the way of Sega, as they themselves have stated that the day they quit making consoles is the day they quit making videogames. However, I can't help but just comment on a couple of your facts.

the majority of people are under the belief they are iin "last" because they sold the fewest units (ironically forgetting about handheld sales)

When people talk about Microsoft's sales they usually "forget" about how many copies of windows they've sold, but that's because those sales have little to do with the console market. Ditto for handhelds.

FACT: Although nintendo does, but a substantial amount, maintain the fewest number of console units sold - they have for over 2 decades, consistantly outsold their competitors in software (where money is really made).

System sales are only of particular use when determining who "won" the console war. The logic there being that whoever sells the most systems is therefore the most popular because they have accumulated the largest fanbase. Unless you are an investor whether or not they're making profit is really immaterial so long as they are making enough money to continue making games. It shouldn't matter to someone if "x" game sold "y" amount of copies, because their opinion of the game should be their own. Useful in an arguement about whether or not Nintendo is going to fold, yes, but otherwise it's a bit of a moot point.

FACT: Nintendo has investors from broker firms abroad considering them a pending "boom". more specifically, merril lynch sayed on the record that "third party developers will flock to the Wii".

Remember how Nintendo had stated that 3rd party developers would flock to the cube because it was so easy to develop for? Didn't happen. I'm not saying the Wii won't attract third party developers, but I'd rather wait and see how that one turns out than take Nintendo's word for it.

FACT: The nintendo DS is exceeding all expectations, and trampling the PSP in sales with a ratio of 3:1, and an even greater ration with their software.

Undeniably true, but keep in mind that until the PSP arrived Nintendo owned about 95% of the handheld market. Sony has wrestled away almost 30% of the market share from Nintendo with their first handheld. Very promising numbers for a companies debut handheld system.

FACT: Nintendo is worth more then Ford or GM, at a current market value of $28 billion. (i stated this in another thread, sorry for the reitteration).

That I did not know, and find kind of funny. How a company that makes videogames can surpass a company that provides transportation to millions of people across the world in terms of profit is quite amazing.

As far as my personal thoughts on NIntendo... they're a big wild card. The gamecube, in my opinion, was a dismal failure, and any future projections based off of it for Nintendo would seem to be very bleak indeed. However, the Wii seems to be a bit of an ace in the hole for Nintendo, in that you can't really use the gamecube as a template for predicting Nintendo's future, becuase the GC and the Wii are just so different in technology, and theory. Whether that difference is for good or ill is yet to be seen.

All in all welcome to the boards, and a good first post nonetheless.

All great counterpoints. I do not remember nintendo stating that developers would flock to the cube, but i'll take your word for it. in any event, to counterpoint that - its not nintendo making the statement, but an market analysis firm!

Yes it is funny that its bigger then GM and ford! Honda, however, is more then 4 times the size of GM, and about 5 times the size of Ford! they really are, the new guys!
