Problems with two consoles.

Okay, my NES power cord broke. I have an aftermarket connector for my Sega Master System, and was wondering if the two were so similar that I could use the one cord for both? I know my Genny and Master System swap out, but not sure with the NES, as there are no power ratings on the cord.

Second, my N64 is acting up. I am still planning to send it Mega's way as soon as I get my butt in gear. A few months back, the console started going strange on me. It would power up, the screen would flicker once and that's it. I slid it back into the box and wrote it off. Well, last night I dropped in Yoshi's Story and messed with it. I got it to work. Now, if it has been playing for a while (Common, my seven year old was freaking when it was working, and played it for two hours straight), and I shut it off and start it up again, it won't send an audio or video feed to the TV. When it sits for a while, it will start playing again.

Mega, I'll find some bubble wrap and box it up for you if I can't find a quick fix.

Pretty sure they're different, I had a wire that said "Genesis and NES" but the thing is, it had two different ends so I'm pretty sure they're different. But if it fits nicely go for it, if it doesn't go in easily then don't force it. I have an AC Adaptor I sometimes use for my NES, think it was for a lantern but it works the same.

You have a gamecube or SNES? SNES, N64, and Gamecube all use the same AV out so you can try switching those to see if it's just your N64's wires doing that.

You're going to have to find out the power ratings of that cord. You can always just plug it in and see if it works, but without knowing the power ratings, you won't really know if it's slowly damaging the system.

According to some electrical wizard I spoke to a while back, if the power rating for the cord is higher than the amount needed for the console, I am in the clear. I guess I'll google the power demand...

Creepin', my son is the youngest retro-nerd out there, and has always wanted to play the N64. But since I originally thought it was dead, it wasn't played. So when he saw it working he went nuts.

Sweet! Hope it's just your N64's AV cord acting up :)

Scratch that. It won't. But the Radio Shack power cord I bought for my Master System is a 9 volt 920mV, and the power needed for the NES is 9 volts, 850mV, asme as the Master System power demand. The Radio Shack guy said if you get a cord that's a bit higher output, then it will be okay because the difference is shed off as heat. But if you power it with something that's less, it will kill the electrical component.

It's not the A/V. I used the A/V cable from my Cube with the same results. I believe it's the connector in the cart port. I doubt something came loose, but I do believe there is a connection issue. But I can't think of why heat would be a contributing factor.

heat can loosen solder points or some other types of metal. One of the reasons 360's get RROD's is because the heat causes the metal to expand on the heatsinks, so they pop off.

But that could by unlikely in your case, but heat can still be a factor.
