The long-rumored, recently leaked existence of PlayStation 2 games joining the "PS One Classics" line comes a bit closer to reality, at least in the mind of PlayStation senior VP Peter Dille who calls the digital re-issues a "terrific opportunity."

In an interview with IGN, Dille says that the PlayStation folks are "working really hard on" bringing more PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games to the PlayStation Store, not quite an official announcement, but another glimmer of hope.

"From our side, we're going through our own studio organization and trying to make sure all these old games are out there so that we can lead by example, but we're also communicating with all the third-parties about the success of the Final Fantasy games, and other PS1 and PS2 classics," Dille tells IGN. "By all means, I think people can look for more of that because once the third-parties see how this works, it's just found money. There's not a whole lot of work that has to go into it and once we can get it up on the network, it finds an audience pretty quickly."

With PS2 backward compatibility all but dead on the PlayStation 3 going forward, it would seem like some of that "found money" would be an attractive option for Sony. About as attractive as the rumored addition of Dreamcast games to the PS3 would be for me.

Maybe we'll hear something official closer to GDC or E3 this year.

I wish they would just make it backwards compatible again. *looks at game shelf* I have 100+ PS2 games, 5 DS games, 9 Wii games and 12 PS1 games. I want me a backwards compatible PS3 >.>

Yea exactly. I just find it a bit odd because a while back when people were complaining about lack of bc on the PS3, a typical response would be "People don't buy a PS3 to play PS2 games, they buy it to play PS3 games". So, now that they've all but eliminated any possibility to actually play used PS2 game discs on the PS3, they want you to enjoy PS2 games again. What a coincidence! And just like the Go, this would completely bypass retailers or people like you and I trying to sell our older used games. I'm sorry but Sony has been leaving a very foul taste in my mouth this gen :-\ {and that's just my personal opinion, don't kill me for it!}

lol nobody would kill you for the opinion. Though, you'll get VERY little money for your PS2 games...you'd have to trade a ton in just to get one. I don't see the sense in that very much. It's hard to imagine PS2 game owners not having a PS2 already. And if they sold it, then shame on them. Taking out the PS2 emulation software in the PS3 helped cut costs to make it the price it is today.

Unfortunately, people will never be happy. If they kept the emulation software, people would whine and moan about the price of the PS3. Now that it's taken out to help cut the costs of the PS3, people will now complain about no backwards compatibility.

Well I already said my piece and I don't wanna get into some big debate here. But I will say, that people have every darn right to complain about something they are going to be spending their hard earned money on. You really cannot blame people for not being able to afford a PS3 in its earlier stages. That is a lot of money to drop on a console, and with the other 2 current consoles having BC, it's a fair enough complaint for people to have. Just my 2 pennies ;)

I disagree whole-heartedly, but you're right. Debating will get us nowhere. :D

I think that when the PS2 stops making money they will release a firmware update with BC.

Or release PS2 games on the network so they can make more money off of previously made games...

Haven't the other companies done this? With Xbox 1 games on the 360 up for download and the VC for the Wii?

But with VC you can get really old and awesome games, a lot of which are pretty much impossible to find. Most PS2 games are still very easily obtainable.

Indeed. If I still had my N64, 100+ games for it, and WalMart had games fro it (because I have no game store around here :'( ) I wouldn't have nearly as many N64 games on my VC.

thing is with the 360 you have the option of playing some XBOX games and with the wii you can play GC games... i don't see why can't Sony give at least the option of a exclusive ps3 Backwards compatible version and keep the cheaper versions still on the market

So, only when they become rare it's a good thing? I don't follow.

when the VC gives the opportunity for us to buy games that it is hard for us to experience today (NES, SNES, N64) it is a good thing.... because it allow us to play old, hard to find games in a new console.

but when it comes to the ps2 games they are still being sold at retails....they are not hard to find at all (or at least most of them) so why take away backwards compatible ps3s away from the market, and then make it so that you have to buy the ps2 game again through psn it is rather a bitter move. sure it is true that they make the ps3s more expensive but can't sony at least give the option of letting us get a BC compatible ps3? it has been proven that they can... it is not like the ps3 needs an extra cartridge port for this kind of stuff (which is why it is understandable why the wii can't play NES/SNES/N64)

It's pretty much exactly what Zidart said.

Good thing- Being able to buy old and rare games at a reasonable price that are either impossible to find, or would cost you a small fortune to obtain.

Bad thing- Having to pay Sony more of your money for a game you either; already own but cannot play due to no bc, owned but sold it thinking there'd be no way to play it due to no bc, could go pick up at retailer for probably less money.

So, that is my rational on the situation.
