This DS Is Rare!
The infamous UK developer puts a team together for DS development despite Microsoft's buy-out.
by Nix
July 7, 2005 - With its now legendary deal to pick up famed game developer Rare from Nintendo for an estimated $250 million, what has Microsoft bought itself? Apparently, amongst other things, a top-shelf Nintendo DS developer.

On the job posting page for Rare, offerings on positions for 3D artists and game programmers to work on Nintendo DS titles are now publicly listed. Despite now being a part of Microsoft, the game developer was rumored to be interested in making titles for the DS -- the handheld team inside the company was included in Microsoft's purchase of the company, and Nintendo DS development kits were said to have been received by the company. Those rumors of DS development, however, were denied months back as the company put all of its focus on Xbox 360 development, with those DS kits supposedly only used for research purposes. Going by these job postings, that research has turned into projects.

But ok... Microsoft Buys Rare... and now Rare is developing again for Nintendo.  So really... Microsoft is developing for Nintendo :lol

It is funny.... a cool turn of events.... but just think if MS invested more into the DS.... and brought some of its PC titles to it.

I am a bit surprised that Microsoft would let rare do this.  I guess money is money to them.... but why would you want to dev for your competitor?  Maybe they want to see the PSP die in hopes that it brings Sony down a bit?

What do you all think?

I think M$ is only allowing them to do this because they want to test the waters. If they ever release a handheld they might as well find out what types of games will be successful. Plus developing for the DS is easy and will most likely be profitable. Hopefully Rare will make a remake of Jet for Gemini. This game will be so awesome on the DS especially if it's online!

yeah... I always wondered if they would get into the Handheld market, but I really think M$ wouldn't get into handheld devices. Its a hard market to break. Sony is finding that out too...

Rare has always been able to develop for handhelds. At least for the GBA...they released a few games for the GBA well after they were bought out by Microsoft.

games that rare made that should go on the DS

jet force Gemini
conkers bad fur day =)
a remake of battletoads

lets see a new Donkey Kong Country, those games are some of the best platformers ever made except for the Mario NES and SNES platformers. I'd buy a DS just for that.

Banjo and Star Fox are owned by Nintendo, but I think the DKC charecters are Rare, because Nintendo needed to change "Diddy Kong Pilot" to "Banjo Pilot"

No, Donkey Kong is not owned by Rare. Donkey Konga, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Mario Kart Doubledash, they all feature DK as a character.

ok, but the charecters created new for the games (Diddy, Dixie, Funky ect.) are ownby Rare.

PS: I don't want to get into an agurment about this, all I know is that devoloping a new DKC game would be pretty much impossible unless you got completly new charecters without Rare.

Diddy was in Double Dash as well. I am almost positive Nintendo retained all rights to the Donkey Kong games. Seeing some of those characters was unlikely anyways.

ok, then can you explain why the name of Diddy Kong Pilot was changed to Banjo Pilot, I'm not trying to get into an argument, I just remember reading that they had to change it after Rare and Nintendo split

"The Donkey Kong Country series died after Rareware split with Nintendo to develop games for the Xbox. Though the DKC series were always solely developed by Rare, they featured Nintendo's trademarked characters and as a result are not allowed to appear on any other system."

So no, Rare is not allowed to use the other characters and Nintendo has full rights to them. So Nintendo can go and make more Donkey Kong Country games if they wanted to.

I knew it! Thanks man, I was trying to find something along those lines. But I don't blame oldschooler for thinking how he did, I mean, if someone bought out Bungie I would assume they got the rights to Halo as well.

No problem. Yes, Oldschooler has a good point, but it is Nintendo. They wont give their characters that easy.

Yeah, the odds of Nintendo losing one of their big names is remote at best. Their big names keep the company going really. A Mario game is going to sell like hotcakes, almost regardless of what it is.

I think the bottom line is how much money a company could make. With the exception of a few cases, competitors are only competitors in the retail end. Companies who are seemingly arch rivals can and do partner up to manufacture their items. Ever pop open a Nintendo cartrage?? Sony guts. Did you know that Toyota and GM built the S10 and Tacoma in the same plant in Fremont, Ca?? Cooper Tire and Parelli Tire teamed up to cut costs in shipping. Ford and GM teamed up to design and manufacture an automatic transmission.
Or I could be completely wrong and Microsoft is allowing this to gain knowledge in the hand held market. Would anyone here buy an Xbox Portable?? If it was priced below the PSP, and has a reasonable game library, then I would.

Take your pick. I was using Microsoft's name because they produce the Xbox. The Xbox is simply the product brand. Could be an Xbox portable, or a Microsoft portable.
