Sony found yet another way to cut down the cost of the PS3! However..

Cheaper parts, but will it mean another price cut?

That would be nice. I've been quietly holding out. This might just push me to get one finally.

I doubt this will mean another price drop. The last time I checked Sony was still losing money on every console sold. Maybe this is just an attempt to stop the bleeding.

I don't know if there are, as of yet, any actual savings to pass on to the customer.

But even though they're losing money on the consoles, aren't they making all of it and more back on the games its selling?

I don't know any numbers for certain, but yes, Sony is making a profit from their Playstation division.

Still, certain elements of that division may not be making a profit, and Sony will not charge less for a product that is costing them money to sell. And even if/when it does become cost effective to sell, I doubt a price drop will reflect that. Price drops are done strategically to make money, not in response to manufacturing efficiencies.
