Segatron Genesis... call me the wizard.
Ubisoft revealed that the development cost of its Wii launch title Red Steel is 10 million Euros (US$12.75 million), the game will have approximately 13 hours playtime. Wii is the cheapest to develop amongst the 3 next-gen consoles.

Do you think with development cost like this for a launch title, will attract more publishers to the Wii?

IMO .. cheaper development is a GREAT start!

will it make a difference?  Not sure.... what WILL make the difference is if 3rd parties enjoy cheaper development and on track sales.
IF that happens... I believe the Wii will be a very popular system to dev for.

It's intruiging, becuase even that number is nearly half the fabled cost of Shenmue's development. I still remember when SEGA was heralding that number over and over. Heh.

Lower prices for development is great.

It definitely helps but Im sure there are some developers out there who just don't want to develop for the console because of the controller. Which sucks, but that's their choice. I read that about 77% of developers questioned are actually excited about the Wii.

Which is why there is the traditional controller. However, Nintendo will most definitely shy away from this kind of development early on - until the Wii is proven as a medium worth developing for in its own right. Then the standard media will come.

Same thing was said about the Gamecube though :-\.

13 hours playtime doesn't seem like enough but then again I work a lot and I don't always have a lot of time to devote to games, so it might be just right. :D

There really wasn't anything that made the GC stand out from its competitors, aside from its small size, multiple colors, and too some people, odd button size and placement.

Well, I think cheap development costs will attract some 3rd parties, will it be enough to keep them around? And just because they are excited about it, does that really mean they want to be a part of it? I guess I'm just too skeptical about some of these companis.

Also, I've never looked at costs for development. Even though thats cheap, that is still a huge amount of money. What does it cost to develop the consoles themselves?

I'm not positive what the R&D cost for consoles is, but I would imagine that they're quite high, considering this research goes on for years and years at times.

For a comparison, in the year 2000 or so, Shenmue had a development cost of about 18-20 million, which was a record amount at the time. So, compare that to this and there you have it.

Also, in regards to the length of the game mentioned eariler... 13 hours is a long time for a FPS game... the desire for games to get longer and longer with no real cause or consideration to quality is astounding..
