Thirteen year old kills himself after being told he could not play Wii screenshot

In an example of teenagers taking just about everything on earth much more seriously than necessary, thirteen year old Jake Roberts made a fatal choice to take his own life after an argument with his father and sister. The reason? Jake wanted to play his brand new Wii, acquired with his birthday money (his birthday had been a few days prior). He then retreated to his room, where he was found hanged by his own school uniform tie a few hours later.

His father commented on the incident:

"The first thing I saw when I walked in to Jake's bedroom was all the paper he had ripped up on the floor during his tantrum.

'The door was open with his bed to my left behind the door. I was going to tell him off when I turned. It took me a few seconds to register what I was seeing.'
'His school tie was round his neck and he was hung from his cabin bed. I tried to lift him and his tie was attached to a bar on the bed."

If someone casually told me that a kid killed himself because he couldn't play the Wii, I might laugh, because it sounds like a joke. Reading the real details, however, I find my laughs have pretty much dried up. I don't think it has a thing to do with the Wii itself, but I have no doubt tragedies like this will only provide more ammo for anti-games activists.

i doubt it was because of the wii i think the boy just had issues, the fact that he had a fight was what triggered his stupid suicide emotions.......kids these days :/ , they don't understand that suicide is not the solution for anything.

Yes, it wasn't the Wii's fault. It was the fact that the kid could not use his new birthday present. It could've been anything, I'd wager, as long as it was something he really wanted.

Sad stuff though. Such a shame to see a death over something so trivial...

I just want to know if this happened in America or Europe. (Since he used a school tie..could be uniforms..and alot of European schools have a dress code)

Nobody's blaming the Wii. Just sad that a kid's restlessness for gaming caused him to kill himself.

well if they are not blaming then wii why the article specifies that he killed himself after not being allowed to play wii??? i belive it was the fight itself but nobody knows for sure.

and call me cruel if you want but i do not feel bad at all, i think this kid was just an idiot for thinking killing himself would solve whatever problem he had, it sickens me when people do that honestly.

Once again, nobody's blaming the Wii. It's because he could not PLAY the Wii. Not the Wii itself.

i agree with you but you know how masses can be, it wasn't the fault of the console but the fact that he killed himself for being desperate enough to play the console... so it still sounds a bit like it is its fault

yes kids like me dont understand that suicide is bad even though ive never thought of suicide as an answer and have told many of my friends and convinced them not to commit suicide

but back on topic:

hes is messed in the head and something was wrong

thats...all

Man, it is so sad that the kid killed himself. I mean, it has nothing to do with the Wii, as mentioned. It has more to do with hormones and emotions and things that were prolly building up in him for awhile.

Some people can't think straight when they get super upset and then do stuff that they otr everyone else regrets.

I feel real sorry for that kid and for his fam. :( I mean, I know it prolly sounds dumb to hang yourself for not getting your way, but that is not the reason he did it. He just could not think clearly at all at the time.

the boy was 13. as mrs enigma said, at 13 years old he probably had so many emotions running though him that he could not control them. kids who commit suicide don't understand the value of their lives. i'm sure not being able to play the wii isn't what made him do it but there shouldn't be anything in a 13 year olds life that should make them want to commit suicide. and i understand that there are kids out there who have horrible lives. but i'm not so sure this kid had it that bad off anyways. he had a frickin Wii!!! anyways my point is that young kids don't know the value of their lives yet, and are not able to understand that once u kill yourself its over.

For all we know, this kid had extreme mental issues, and when being told he couldn't play the console in which he spent his birthday money one, probably freaked out and yeah...

Strangely, your post is just as bad as Jack's.

i guess you should read more carefully to notice that it wasn't the wii itself, it was
1. the kid had serious mental problems.
2. the kid did not have a good relationship with his family.
3. like strubes already pointed (if you cared to read the thread) the kid never got to even play the wii so it can't be the wii's fault.

seriously would it hurt you to stop baiting at least once :/?

Also, he was angry because he couldn't play it. Yup, sure seems like he hated it. Shockingly, even suicide victims don't agree with you all the time.
