Virus? Or is Windows NT getting long in the tooth?

Hey all,

Question here. I've been having issues with my computer. The general question is WTH is going on?

Symptoms include periodic restarts, freezing screens and Google giving me random sites when I click on specific links. Remember the constant window flickering? Yeah I guess that was a problem too.

My wife searched about a file we have been having issues with, and we were told to delete it at once. In other words, a potentially harmful file being corrupted by it's self. The file is gone, and I downloaded an anti virus program that went through everything seems to be okay.

Anyways, if the anti virus program worked, then this is a moot point. If it didn't though, what kind of virus should I bee looking for? And should I just call it a loss and buy a new computer?

i would say yeah thats smart but you would lose all your files for everything

and you cant really do them in backup cause then the virus might get in the backup

so i think the best bet is a new compy if the virus protection doesnt work

Yep. Buying a new computer. Since I don't use these things much outside of surfing the web, I'm settling for an upgraded version of what I already have. It's $400 at that evil place called Wally World.

My brother had this cool thing on his computer that hooked up hard drives, and his computer could scan it and extract the files (like pictures) and import them to his computer to burn to a CD. He then would delete everything else to kill the virus.

It's weird though. It will work for a while, and then if I run a virus scan, it will shut the computer down.

I recommend just getting an external hard drive and placing all of your important files there. When you get your new computer, you can install an anti-virus program and then scan the external before you move the files back to your new computer.

UPDATE: Just wanted to say, "Holy crap, you still run Windows NT?!!!!". I say it's time to upgrade that OS regardless of whether you have a virus or not. Newer operating systems are going to be less vulnerable to viruses and are supported much better hardware and software wise.

Yeah then buy a new computer, get something that isnt from WalMart, or even better, since they sell Dell's now, just get one of those cool 399$ 12 inch Laptops (Inspiron Mini), they are cool, offer a 160GB and still just cost 399! Perfect for browsing the web and productivity!

They're nice, but they're not desktop replacements. They're meant to be supplemental to laptops and/or desktops. Not to mention that there are more powerful netbooks out there for the same price.

There are nettops that are meant to be desktop replacements, but they won't last as long as a proper desktop. But keeping this comment in the spirit of Dell, they do have some nice desktops on sale. Not sure what it is exactly you're looking for.
