Why was Resident Evil called Resident Evil and not Biohazard? Here's why...

In late 1994, Capcom Entertainment in the US was starting to ramp up marketing plans for the game that would eventually become known as Resident Evil in the US. Capcom Japan had let us know that the name of the game was going to be ‘Biohazard' in Japan, but I pointed out to the person who ran marketing at the time that it would be next to impossible for Capcom to register the name in the US.

As an example, I pointed out that a crappy DOS-based game had just come out in the US called ‘Biohazard' (not to mention the New York hardcore band of the same name) and that we'd never be able to secure the mark. As a result, the head of marketing held a company-wide contest to come up with a new name for the game.

And that is why :)

I already knew that, but I think Resident Evil is a much better title than Biohazard. Think about it, Biohazard tells you exactly what is going on before you even play the game. That would be like calling Doom 3 "Demons Invade From Hell" :p Resident Evil leaves it mysterious.

You really think so? I always thought "Resident Evil" was kind of a silly name. "Resident" is fine, but its like they blanked with what to put after that. Somebody suggested "Resident... I dunno, something evil" and when they failed to come up with anything specific they just left it as "evil" itself. Its the equivalent of calling the final boss of a video game "final boss," or the villain of a movie "Villainous."

I didn't know why they changed the name though. Makes sense, when you think about it, I guess.

:lol I see what you are saying, but thats what I think about Biohazard as a name. Its a game about a Biohazard, so that's what you call it? Different strokes for different folks lol

:lol Stubes

And Resident Evil is a far better name name than Biohazard... though, if it were called that to beggin with, our opinions on it would be the opposite.

Though, i always was a little curious about why it was called Resident Evil; but titles these days can be rather random and odd, and sometimes have no relation tot eh story itself at all.
When I first read the title and played the game, I figured it was something in relation to the "Residents" of the local region being turned "Evil"; hence being Zombies... of course, play through the main part of the mansion and get further in you know it's actually due tot eh T-Virus and not some shoddy cult thing :lol
