Craziness.
In the heady days before we knew Nintendo's Wii system would become a runaway casual success, some may remember an understandably nervous Nintendo executive Satoru Iwata commenting that if the Wii didn't outsell the GameCube, it would be a failure. Ha ha!
It's a pretty safe bet nowadays that the Wii will end up beating the GameCube in worldwide sales unless something tragic -- like random fatal console explosions -- bottoms out the market. But just how quickly it's reaching that point in some territories really puts things in perspective. GoNintendo reports the latest issue of Famitsu features sales numbers that state Wii has officially passed the GameCube's total cumulative sales in Japan. The Wii reached 4,025,356 this week, beating out the total GameCube install base in the region. This means it took just over a year for Nintendo to surpass all Japanese sales of the GameCube since its launch in 2001.
MediaCreate sales still put the Wii slightly behind the GameCube, but only by about 100,000, a gap that should disappear within a few weeks.
Impressive point-of-note for Wii or sad commentary on the GameCube's popularity? Perhaps a little of both. The report also notes the DS reached this number in about the same amount of time. And we all know how well that system is doing.
