Will James Bond Be PlayStation-only?
Sony is buying MGM. But what does it mean for gaming?

September 14, 2004 - Whence the Annie Hall FPS? The Wizard of Oz Online? While it's amusingly conceivable that Sony could explore such videogame projects once its purchase of Hollywood giant MGM is finalized (see our full story), the more serious question for the game industry is what might happen to games based on MGM properties such as James Bond and Rocky.

As reported, Sony Corporation of America, in consortium with media giant Comcast and a selection of other investors, has made a winning bid to purchase long-time Hollywood studio and production giant Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The purchase, estimated at around $4.8 billion, was won from competing bidder Time Warner at the last moment, when Comcast jumped in to join Sony in the deal.

While the deal has yet to be officially finalized, Sony's massive presence in the video game industry means the addition of MGM and its classic film properties could have ramifications for gamers.

While MGM has recently pared down its studio output to focus on its classic films, stretching back to greats like Gone With the Wind, that library includes game-ready IPs like The Pink Panther, Rocky, and James Bond.

Of course, Bond and Rocky have both already spawned video games. Currently handled by Electronic Arts and Ubisoft, respectively, it's possible that Sony would absorb future game development for these popular franchises. Of course, we wouldn't expect current contracts at EA or Ubisoft to be affected by the MGM deal, but properties like James Bond or Rocky would probably look pretty tantalizing as Sony Computer Entertainment in-house projects if and when previous contracts are ended -- and that could also mean PlayStation exclusivity.

Of course, it's still too early to tell, leaving us to mere speculation. Still, it never hurts to dream. A few in the office are already clamoring for the Thelma & Louise racing game. Time will tell.

please post up your opinions.

Doesn't EA own the rights to making Bond video games? I don't think that is affected by Sony buying MGM. I think if Sony decided they wanted to make the video games, they'd have to buy the rights back from EA.

I think EA's deal runs until like 2007 or something. So it will probably be a while before we really have to worry about Bond being only on a Sony system.

But I don't really like the Bond games anyway, so it doesn't matter to me either way.

I think its more along the lines of MGM gives the rights to EA (purchased... maybe?)... there would be a contract.

BUT under new ownership, EA could still have the rights, but Sony could really through some weight into the decision if they wanted to..... In essence... Sony could get it done.... I believe at least.

EA is already pretty Sony friendly. Look at how long it took them to decide to support XBOX Live, and now that they do, a lot of EA games have issues with Live.

http://xbox.ign.com/articles/548/548472p1.html

The issues, which belong almost entirely to Xbox Live users, and not PlayStation 2 users, are vast and range in size. They include:

Players can't launch game: When trying to launch a game, the launch button is grayed out. There is no message telling you what's up.

Friends List function is broken: The friends list function is unreliable and frustrating.

Can't Join Annoyance: If you can't join a friend while he or she is in a different lobby, join the club.
Account Inactive Bug: Sometimes you will be logged off while waiting for someone else to finish racing. The message reads "this account has been inactive."

Communication Issues: People in the same room can't always hear one another. If you fiddle with the audio output settings you can regain functional audio.

Random Disconnects. Servers drop players randomly.

Gamers from different Territories can't play: Matching 50 hertz games (Europe) with 60 hertz games (North America) with a game that runs this fast appears to be the main issue. It appears that Criterion didn't want to lose speed and framerate by having these mixed territories playing together.

And

EA clarified, however, that the technical problems have nothing to due with Microsoft's servers.

So basically, EA games on XBOX Live are running poorly due to EA's servers, and yet there are no such problems on the PS2 side of things. o_O

But back to Bond....I didn't even like Goldeneye on the N64. I thought Perfect Dark was better. Rare is not quite what they used to be, but I think Perfect Dark Zero will be more to my liking than the next Bond game.

Thats because Rareware IS NOT who they used to be.

Programmers left after Microsoft bought them out (at least this is a big rumor),
www.zoonami.com has some funny insite on this.

Rare .... have they even come out with 1 good game since Starfox?
I think they have only came out with 1 game period.

I would have liked to see Nintendo buy them up and pump out some good games..... but I think Nintendo was smart. I mean.. RAreware is SLOOOOOWWWW. Yerah, some of their games were good. They are just too slow, and I cannot imagine that working well when millions of dollars are at stake.

Yeah, Rareware takes forever to work on games. We are talking HAlo 2 long or longer, and most of their games aren't anticipated on a level like that. But as far as bBond games go,

Goldeneye-My favorite (Bond game) by far. A true classic.
Agent Under fire-Mediocre, not what I was expecting after playing Goldeneye
Nightfire-Never played it, looked way to much like AUF
Everything or Nothing-Looked promising, never tried it
Goldeneye Rouge Agent looks good on a side note.

Spoilers for those who haven't played Starfox Adventures..........

Well I would say that Starfox Adventures was good in parts, but not overall great. It wasn't very well-balanced. About 90% of the game was ground-based and yet they expected you to be able to kill the final boss in the Arwing. It was great up until that part. I've played Star Fox games before but Andross in Starfox Adventures was really hard, and from reading the IGN boards, I know I'm not the only one who felt that way.

Grabbed By the Ghoulies is the only game Rare has put on the XBOX since MS bought them. From what I have heard, it's a solid game as far as gameplay goes. But it's pretty much aimed at a younger demographic, so most XBOX fans won't appreciate it.

GBTG is a game that is hard to enjoy for me. My cousins like it, but they are little. I admit I own the game, but it came with my Xbox.

I really liked Luigi's Mansion so I thought I might like Grabbed by the Ghoulies. I played a demo and it was pretty fun. I haven't been inspired enough to buy it, though.

Luigi's mansion is an AWESOME game. Not many people know what a treasure that game is.

It was short.... there was a downfall... and not a lot of playability... but that game is AWESOME... and its very fun.

Not much of replayability? Major difference there!

GBTG is a straigtforward action game. Innovative controls graphics etc, worth it for $15 or less.
