Nintendo has said in a consumer email that it will give further details of a DVD playing Wii in "the latter half of 2007".

Nintendo and Sonic Solutions revealed last year that both companies would team up and launch a DVD playing Wii at some point in the future. A Go Nintendo reader sent the Big N an email asking about it's the new model of Wii coming with DVD playback and when it will be released.

The response? "As you know, Nintendo and Sonic Solutions have made an agreement to allow Nintendo the use of Sonic Solutions' DVD technology in a future version of the Wii console. However, launch details, like where (regions or countries) it will sell, release date, or price (although it will be more expensive than the original version) are currently unavailable and won't be revealed until sometime in the latter half of 2007. It will not be available as an add-on attachment."

The email then goes on to deter anyone owning a DVD player (but let's face it, who doesn't?) from buying the new Wii. "For those who already own a DVD player at home, the launch version of Wii will be the best choice. This version of the console is more affordable and you'll be able to enjoy Wii games immediately.

Breaking it down..your Wii right now....is okay..it's good..just these will have 1 stupid extra feature...DVD playback..big whoop..

I agree, why do you need another DVD Player? I am willing to bet everyone has at least 1 player in their house, plus a system or two that can play them. By not including the DVD playback, nintendo kept the price of their system down, i am happy with what i have, i dont need a nother dam dvd player :D

Come on guys, Nintendo wants you to buy a 360. Haha duh! It's the year of the Wii60!

Nintendo is really shady in this though. Although I'm sure they'll be backed up 100%. :lol

What?? Nintendo is shady and is always pulling this crap?? Surely you jest!!

Okay, here's my opinion. The Big N is planning a DVD playable Wii. Whooptie freakin' do. They didn't offer it in the launch Wii. Big deal. At leat they never showed a PS3 with all the bells and whistles and then hacked the final product up and offered all the seemingly standard equipment as "extras." And expensive extras at that. But hey, It's Nintendo. They aren't allowed to update their consoles like the other guys do (read big ol' fat PS2 and slim PS2 fellas).

So to all the people who are griping about this. Wanna play a DVD?? Use a DVD player. Nintendo did a fine job of designing a game console to play games with. So it doesn't play DVDs or open cans or do your taxes. It's gaming at it's purest.

:lol Actually, the DVD player was something that alot of people were hoping would be on the first version of the Wii. But, like I said. Nintendo will be backed up to the end. :lol

Backed up to the end, eh?? Funny. I never considered myself a "fanboy", or a diehard fan of anything for that matter. But what I am stating is simply facts. Sony screws people for everything they got in order to make a buck. The original PS2 couldn't handle playing DVDs for any length of time, and in comparison to the slim version, it wasn't very reliable. Although it had online capabilities, one must buy the necessary hardware to take advantage of the feature. Now the PS3 doesn't come with the necessary cables (or so I have heard) for true hi def applications. The necessary cable through Sony is somewhere near $90.

Here's my point. You cannot bash Nintendo for not including a feature that has absolutely nothing to do with gaming. And gaming is why Nintendo is in business. And to say that "only Nintendo does this or that" is to me plain stupid. Because Sony loves to screw their customers. But maybe their customers are used to it...

Sony likes to screw their customers, so maybe Nintendo's finally taking an idea from them. I don't recall once calling you a Nintendo fanboy, nor did I say "only Nintendo does this or that".

My opinion stands as is.

Was there an online poll or something? I haven't seen any numbers of people who actually wanted a DVD player. All the talk I heard was about the Wii Remote and what it would bring. Actually, now that I think about it, the only place I heard it being wanted was by a couple of people on this board back before launch.

Anyways, as it is now, it's pretty dumb to even introduce it this late. Maybe if the GameCube had it then it would be a big deal. I guess those who really wanted a DVD player with their Wii will get it. As for me Im sticking with my Non-DVD playing Wii. Won't ever buy the "new and improved" Wii.

Strubes, you didn't call me a fanboy. But whether intentional or not, the implication was there. But it's not an issue for me. I just thought it weird that one would say that Nintendo is "doing it again" in regards to screwing their customers, or "Nintendo will always be backed up" no matter what. Of course they would be backed up. Because they build solid products and in comparison to the competition, they have historically had the least amount of problems.

I must beat the dead horse one more time in saying that a DVD option is simply a waste of time and has absolutely no bearing on game play.

Nobody needs another old format DVD player and adding HD-DVD to the Wii would have sent the price sky high. Nintendo was wise to stay out of that whole HD vs. Blu-ray contest and just focus on making a game machine.

Between my other consoles and an actual DVD player, I have about 6 things that can play DVDs. It's not necessary on the Wii IMO.

I guess this is mostly for the whiny punks who are like "OMG why doesn't the Wii play DVDs": ...now their stupid selves can stop complaining.
