Abused as Gamers This Gen?

I came upon this article from one of my Twitter feeds.

We Have Been Abused as Gamers This Generation.

Totally agree with pretty much everything the author has written in it.

Some highlights:

The first few years of the generation seemed to be characterized by a weird release pattern where all game releases were crowded around holiday periods leaving the long boring spring and summer months devoid of anything worthwhile. This made smaller games that had the audacity to get released in the autumn have an immediate death sentence. These guys immediately got buried under an avalanche of Madden, Call of Duty, and Mario games.

God forbid we ask for games we actually want like import games, innovative games, new genres, and artistic games. Hell no, we’re going to play another franchise sports game or shooter, and we’re going to like it. If a niche game or something out of the ordinary does come out, it always seems to be set up for failure due to a stealth release, no advertising, or releasing it amongst the aforementioned Christmas avalanche.

I strongly agree and love this article. The man speaks truth! Does it make you wonder with a flooded market like this, do you feel we are heading to another market crash?

Edit: Never mind, the article actually answers that for me. :D

Eh. although I agree with this article 100% I just don't know exactly what else to do to help the industry... I already buy a lot of niche games that I actually enjoy (Ys, Legend of heroes, Okami, Muramasa, Bayonetta, Tales of) and I do try to advertise it and ironically enough that seems to be working for me.

But quite honestly (and I may be criticized for what I am about to say) I want region locks.....Yes, I the person who loves Tales games and Japanese RPGs that rarely come to this country wants region lock on his consoles...why? because I don't want to have to
1) pay almost $70 or more to import a game i am not even sure it is any good.
2) having to play a game in a language i don't understand...I can do it (I did it for 13 years when Spanish was my only language)
3) having to mod my console and resort to "piracy" in order to patch my game into English thanks to a fan made patch that might ultimately ruin my console or not work at all.

I don't think just giving up and importing a game is fair... I think that we should push for localization. But well I guess region locking won't really solve the issue either because people will still find a way around it....(for the record I have only made 1 import and that was with tales of eternia for the PSP)

And as far as games getting sequels over and over again....well It's a hit or miss for me. I love when I can revisit the universe of a game i previously played or play around with improved gameplay mechanics of a game I already loved. However I also gotta remember that my favorite genre of gaming are RPGs and even when RPGs get sequels they do play wildly different or they have a completely different story altogether... I guess my only problem with "Sequelitis" is having a sequel come out every single year. I am ok with having all those Mario, Zelda, God of war, Ninja gaiden, Trauma center, Ys, and metroid games get more and more sequels because they don't receive constant sequels every single year, and even when they do receive a sequel they feel different from the last.

What I don't agree with is the CONSTANT yearly sequels that appear time after time after time (like call of duty and Madden) and most cases gameplay does not change much at all.

But honestly I think the only problem this generation is just advertising... If i sit down and explain to my friends what Ys or Sora no kiseki or even tales is all about I bet that I can convince them to try the game out, or if they saw a trailer or a commercial on TV there will be a lot of people who will think about it and buy the game....if there was more advertising of newer IPs this whole problem would probably be solved.

sorry for the long post but I just had to get all of these controversial thoughts out of my head because....I have actually enjoyed this generation of gaming... you see for me last 2 gens (gamecube/N64, PS1/PS2 Dreamcast.. etc etc etc) were really the gens that got me into gaming since in the era of the NES and SNES I didn't play videogames that much due to the fact that I had no choice in the matter of which games were given to me, i was far too young. But last 2 generations helped me develop who I am as a gamer and what kinds of games I like, it introduced me to so many genres and I picked the ones I enjoyed the most.

This generation of gaming, now that i am an adult and I can not only pick the games I wanted but also work my butt off for them is where I got to know in-depth more about the genres I have picked as my favorites, and was introduced to many different new videogame series, as well as helping me open up to not be a "nintendo only fanboy".

what's the point i am trying to get across from my brain? that although most of those points in that article are true... as a gamer, I don't think I feel abused or that this generation was terrible or that it had less quality games than previous generations, in fact... I don't care...all i care is that I have had lots of fun with the games introduced to me this gen and that's what makes it succesful for me, not that some games sold or others did not but that I got the chance to enjoy them.

I read the post but could not discern the argument put forth. What's this person's beef, exactly? That the Wii is getting the shaft in America?

Seriously, Mai, or anyone, if you could clarify what this person is getting at I'll write a real response to it. :lol

I think it's that, in general, the US doesn't see a lot of the popular Japanese games, not just for the Wii.

Seriously? Ok, well, that's easy.

Ahem. *clears throat*

Dear Americans,

The World does not revolve around you. Deal with it.

Sincerely,

The World.

This message brought to you by Canada. :D

I personally find that alot of the Japanese games have been coming out, or at least the ones that I have been excited/want to play.

Also, if America is complaining, Australia should be rioting, just saying. ;) Followed by the UK.

This hosier speaks truth. Now that he mentions it, I want to find out if Canada has ever had these types of problems? As for the article, after re-reading it, it does dawn on me the writer leaves out the PS3 and 360 in the process. Wii is an easy topic since it's so obviously getting shafted faster than any previous Nintendo portable.

There are some games on the PS3 and 360, but not nearly as much as the Wii. And I think the reason why the Wii in particular is being singled out is that many of these games were actually announced at E3 last year or in 2008 and now all of a sudden NoA is tight lipped about it. It's like if your parents showed you something cool and were like "Here, you're going to get this for Christmas" but when Christmas rolls around they're like "I don't know what you're talking about."

I can be honest and say that personally I only care about them because they are jrpgs and I feel like this gen is lacking in really great jrpgs.

And the really good JRPGS that are released do go ignored thanks to the pile of genetic FPS and Sports titles. You're right. Every time I hear of a JRPG it's on the PS3 strangely enough like Cross X Edge, Neptunia, Disgaea 3, Catherine, etc.

Catherine looks pretty cool, I have to say.

Yeah it looks unique. Yet ATLUS and NIS have been a driving force, I just wonder why they pick PS3 and ignore 360? Probably Sony dished out the right price for the rights.

Possibly, or they are sticking with the PS3 as they stuck with the PS2 last gen. I believe that Catherine is actually multiplatform, though. I would just get it on the PS3 to beef up my library. :)

Ah, I agree to that one! Sticking with name brand loyalty and usually during the last few years of a system they start pouring out the titles after getting comfortable with the hardware.

I don't think Catherine is a JRPG actually... but honestly my RPGs for this gen are mostly on my PSP or ironically enough my wii.. I have Tales of Symphonia 2, super paper mario, Muramasa the demon blade, and Fire emblem Radiant dawn while on the PS3 side I only have Final Fantasy XIII, Eternal Sonata and recently added to my mix is Star Ocean The Last Hope. Now thankfully most of the RPGs I mentioned have been really great ones but this generation is lacking. In fact I think I cried tears of joy when i found out tales of Graces F was coming over America.

but of course i still get my JRPG fix from my PSP and DS after all 90% of my PSP games are RPGs and the DS has a couple of my favorite RPGs being the world ends with you and devil survivor... but you know it was nice to play something with high production values such as Star Ocean and see a vast RPG universe in such high definition and I would love more of that....hopefully namco-bandai will be smart and localize tales of Xillia as well

Yeah, I definitely have some great rpgs on the DS and PSP, but there's just something about seeing one on a high def television that you just can't recreate on a handheld.

re: Catherine - reading the reviews on it, it seems like it's more of a puzzle game with rpg elements. But it still looks pretty cool.
