Anyone own a Kindle?

Pros:

  • Great for traveling since you don't have to carry a bunch of books with you.
  • books are generally cheaper.
  • Thinner than a regular book.

Cons:

  • Online store isn't as abundant as a regular book store.
  • Kindle itself is a bit expensive.
  • Harder to read in low light.

If I think of anymore, I'll post them. I'm personally looking into getting one.

ONline store isnt abundant? Id say its the same across the board for all ebook stores. For its new low price of 189, it isnt that expensive.

It's not as abundant as a brick and mortar store. I just wrote "regular store" but B&M is what I meant. It's definitely growing but licensing issues usually hold up a book going digital.

and $189 is pretty expensive for a piece of hardware to just read text depending on your income.

I love books. I really like the way they feel and smell and it's hard for me to get past that and into a digital reader. However, I also don't have a lot of room in my house for books, so I was thinking of getting one.

I just got the Kindle app for my Android phone the other day and decided to try it out and see how I like it. OMG I just realized why I am going to love digital readers. INSTANT gratification. I don't have to go to the bookstore to buy a book (while I do still love them, sometimes it's inconvenient), or wait for Amazon.com to ship a book to me. I can tap with my little finger and I have something to read immediately! It's SOOOOOO awesome! My brain actually froze up I got so excited and I couldn't think of the next book I wanted to buy!

That's true, but it's usually the books that are in between that don't make it to the digital world. Even new books are having trouble since some publishers are asking for more money. I hope it all gets sorted soon as I would like to own a Kindle and know that my favorite book will be available.

I think Amazon lets authors publish it straight to kindle. I saw reports saying people were racking up those types of titles that sale from like 99 cents to even 3.99.

Some do, but usually best sellers and any other big book go for around $15. It's been a while since I've checked the store, but I believe Amazon is fighting to keep prices the way they are and because of that, some publishers won't release their titles on the Kindle. Since they want more money.

I have an ipaq 3955 PDA that I have setup to be an ebook reader. It is backlit and a very nice size to carry around. I had considered a Kindle at one point, but the idea that it was not backlit was critical in my own personal use. I do understand that such a feature would probably shorten battery life on a Kindle. But in a well lit environment I would rather use the real thing.

They just recently released the kindle DX, I believe, its $380, but I hear it's better for low light reading.

I like regular books. I often underline and highlight in the books that I read (No, I don't own any fiction novels. Just history, documentary, etc). I also write in the margins.

I don't, but I also know that Kindle is not the only e-reader on the market. Have you already researched the other ones and decided that the Kindle is the one you are most interested in? :) If not, it might be worth looking into.

I think I might pick it (Kindle) up in August since I get a bonus for payday or something (hoping). Looking around all the books I like are actually on the kindle store (yay for teen novels!) and I can finally read the twilight saga! Manga I will still get the actual hard copies of since I love having them on my shelf.
