Whether you like it or not, the next generation of optical disc players are here. Prices are estimated to be around $1000 for the players and around $40 for movies.

The Blu-ray Disc high-definition optical disc format will launch in the U.S. on May 23 when the first player and movies become available, backers of the format said this week.

So now movies are gonna have to be sold in VHS, DVD, HD DVD, and Blue Ray formats, while also being made available in Widescreen and Fullscreen editions? Not to mention special collector's editions, anniversay collection editions, and Director's Cut editions? Man, picking which movie to buy is going to be as complicated as picking... well I dunno, something really complicated and with serious compatibility issues. :lol

I wouldn't mind it so much, if it didn't have such a high price. x.x
The problem is, if this really turns out to be the wonder that is DVD players... the "if you don't have one you're not cool" concept attempts to play out on you :P

I'd have to win one in order to get one. I'm not gonna spend $1000 on something that makes pixels look pretty.

"if you don't have one you're not cool"

Once High School is over, this concept isn't nearly so persuasive as it once was. :lol

The problem is, I don't even have an HDTV to watch either format on. I used to actually be "with" the times, but keeping up with all this technology is just not possible. It makes me sad to say "I'll wait till they add some more features to it and pick one up" when I see something really cool that I want, and once eveything is integrated into them I end up getting last year's model and settling for it the way I initially saw it. No bells and whistles, no state of the art, *sigh*...

Money can't buy real happiness, but it sure comes in handy when trying to buy that fake kind that doesn't last very long.

From what I've been reading it will end up being cheaper to buy the regular DVD's and once you do have an HDTV, just buy a DVD player that can upscale the image. And then you can start your HD DVD collection and still enjoy both.
