Yes we're aware of Microsoft's official "no comment" position on the theoretical existence of a Blu-Ray enabled Xbox 360. Nevertheless, today Engadget brings word via the Chinese-Language-only Economic Daily News that a company called Pegatron (a subsidiary of hardware maker ASUS) has just won a contract to assemble "an Xbox 360 with a Blu-Ray Disc ROM drive."
Even better, the new unit is scheduled for release on the open market as early as Q4 (i.e. September) 2008. Now of course this is all hearsay cobbled together from the Chinese business press, and no official statement from Microsoft has yet been made. Still, with HD-DVD dead such a device would definitely be a nifty addition to the 360 hardware. After all, one thing the Xbox 360 absolutely needs is one more confusing SKU to keep track of.

Discuss.

I think that they should stick to the standard DVD drive they're currently using. Why the hell would they need to upgrade anyway? The device is popular as it is with sales running better than the PS3 and it's Blu-ray. And if they upgrade to the Blu-ray, that means they must produce even more games to run on the new system and already that's adding up to alot of money. Especially if they still intend on allowing all of those that don't have a Blu-ray and wish to keep their current games! Which means even more money. And say if things go the same direction as did the PS3, they will not be gaining any immediate sales to begin with and they'll have to start off very slow rather than being able to bring out their quantities of games that people want each time. Maybe if they bring out a new-gen system some time, and not meddle further with the 360', they can stick a stinkin' Blu-ray in there.

It's just enabled. It's still gunna have the DVD drive in it already meaning everything would be fine. And as Strubes said. Too little too late.

Well that's alright. i thought they'd replace the whole thing. Still, i don't think they need to really bother with this.

Would do if possible, but not every is able to afford these things. When they down in price, then it'll be fine. but right now the blu-ray is still pretty pricey.

does it matter if it's pricey and if not everyone can get it? No. as long as they sell that's all they care about. and by the time this does come out the PS3 would have caught up to the 360 in sales in some way and whoever does want a Blu-Ray player would already have gotten their player.

great now they need motions and microsoft will be indeed the copiest company ever..... gosh >_> i like the 360 and all that but i hate microsoft.

Both Sony and Microsoft are supposedly working on a Wiimote style controller for use with 'more casual games'.

I really hope they don't. We don't need the PS3/360 plagued by bad game syndrome because they're going after the casual audience.
