More than a year after Sony declared victory in the format war, it appears that Microsoft is officially embracing Blu-ray, to an extent. In an interview with Gizmodo, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer confirmed that the Xbox 360 will eventually be received a Blu-ray add-on drive.

The confirmation came when Ballmer was asked whether the Xbox 360 would be getting a Blu-ray drive anytime soon. He replied, "Well I don't know if we need to put Blu-ray in there - you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories."

As Gizmodo points out, it's possible that Microsoft is merely pointing out that any Xbox 360 Blu-ray drive would have to be external, and that it's not an actual confirmation. For its part, Xbox 360 representatives are keeping their cards pretty close to their chest, saying that they're not ready to comment on future plans.

Microsoft has repeatedly denied plans for a Blu-ray player since the format war came to an end last year. Director of product management Aaron Greenberg issued the most recent denial, saying that Microsoft believes that the future is digital, and that they won't "force people to pay for things they don't want."

With no official details, we can only assume that Microsoft is waiting until CES to make an official announcement.

Beating a dead horse, Microsoft?

At least the 360 can be used as a home theater PC with media center compatability. At least that makes it a lil competative w/ blu-ray.

Can't a PS3 be used as the same? You can store your movies and music on it, and even turn it into a PC if you'd like, along with keyboard and mouse and even printer functionality. I think it's a little too late for Microsoft here. I can only imagine the price of the add-on....it's going to cost more than the PS3 all together unless they have yet another price cut.

if the add-on costs more than about $80-100 then microsoft better not even make it.

blue ray players themselves are coming down in price. i see them go for about 160-180 now in the store...some lower than that.

Yeah, supporting Sony wouldn't be a very smart move (bythat I mean since Sony owns the technology, MS would have to pay them to use it, correct?)

Yes, they would have to license it. But if they do support it, there's a good chance that MS would penetrate more homes than a PS3. The more consoles that are sold, the better it's supported by 3rd party publishers. That would probably be the reason if they did go with this plan.

Microsoft says no.

Same ol' song and dance, Microsoft. I believe this same rumor ran the gambit about a year ago, and Microsoft squashed that one, as well. I was kind of hoping for some truth to this, assuming they could cut the price down; however, they couldn't possibly make it cheaper than a PC Blu-ray drive. If I were truly dying for Blu-ray, I'd go that route over a console.

exactly, why buy a $80-100 accessory if there are so many cheaper alternatives out there? especially if there is a 54% chance the console is FUBAR?
