Blue Dragon discussion

Well the 7.9 by itself isn't bad. It's above average, actually. But combined with the 6.5, 7.5, 6.5 scores from EGM, it doesn't sound quite like it's worth dropping $60 for.

Yeah, 7.9 isn't bad, but most people ignore games under 8, even if just by .1

Even at a 7.9 for me, I still wouldn't get it because I never really got into the genre as a whole. I'll usually only play a JRPG is its been reviewed exceptionally well, and a 7.9 in a genre I really don't like much to begin with, isn't enough for me to buy the game...plus, EGM always scores really, really harshly..

I have played rpgs rated lower than that by IGN. Tales of Legendia for example was 7.7. But I think if you are a Tales fan it rates a little higher than that.

Which is why I will still get Eternal Sonata if it's below 8. I love the kind of rpgs that Namco Bandai makes.

I can't wait for Eternal Sonata..hopefully Blue Dragon will be long enough to keep me occupied for the week or so between the games. :lol

I definitely will. I'm trading in a few games towards it. It's amazing how much more credit you get when you trade in towards the reservation of a game! $30 turned into $46 or something last time. :D

Well that's good to hear. :)

I'll definitely let you know though, as I plan on beating Blue Dragon within the week that I get it. :D

From IGN's review:

The major problems with Blue Dragon come at the front of what can easily be a more than 50-hour game experience. Because of limited disc space, Blue Dragon spans three DVDs. Some have questioned Microsoft's choice in media, because games such as Blue Dragon illustrate the limited space on a DVD. Blue Dragon has more immediate concerns raised by its multi-disc status; the first DVD is downright boring.

The amount of time you have to invest in Blue Dragon before the payout occurs is excessive by any measuring stick. The presentation of character development, skill acquisition, and interesting side quests is skewed heavily towards the latter third of the game. For the first 10-15 hours Blue Dragon offers linearity, characters you know little about, and little in the means of interesting action or combat. It's not a far stretch of the imagination at all to think that a great number of gamers won't make it over this first hump. The pacing just isn't one that will hook anybody early on and likely won't resonate with a good portion of the American audience. You won't be alone if you're 5-10 hours into the game scratching your head as you wonder when the fun starts.

Here's a breakdown of the review.

6.5 Presentation
The pacing and story are unlikely to be well received by the majority of the American audience.

8.0 Graphics
It looks nice but could use a lot of work to make it run smoothly.

7.0 Sound
That boss music gets seriously annoying.

7.5 Gameplay
Classic RPG gameplay with a few nice touches.

8.0 Lasting Appeal
Go ahead and try to get all of the achievements.

Well, according to the IGN article Mai showed, you'll have to play like 8 hours a day, Strubes...that may be a little hard, lol...I could have sworn it was longer than 50 hours too...
