VLC Player.
Not as fancy as other players but supports a lot more codecs than the others. It will be difficult to find a video it can't play.

For music, Winamp or Amarok (idk if it's on Vista)

Yeah, Winamp or Windows Media Player. There's also RealPlayer which I believe is compatible.
Though, most Window's already come with Windows Media Player, at least version 10, I'd assume by now. if yours doesn't have it, then it's easier to download Winamp.
