CASTLEVANIA Harmony of Despair for XBLA. (Update: Awesome SOTN Level DLC)

CastleVania Harmony of Despair

Konami may be orchestrating two Castlevania games, Castlevania: Lord of Shadow and Castlevania: Harmony of Despair.

The second title has not been announced, but Konami trademarked Harmony of Despair in Europe. And Harmony of Despair follows the post Rondo of Blood naming formula of “something (possibly musical) of something else.”

Candidly speaking, this is just a guess at what Harmony of Despair could be, but the Nintendo DS seems due for another Castlevania game. Order of Ecclesia, which was also coincidentally discovered via a trademark a few months before E3, came out two years ago.

Re: CASTLEVANIA Harmony of Despair for NDS!? Yes a 4th MetroidVania!? Let's see!

I haven't finished Ecclessia. I think the different system made it weird.

If they return to the old style, like Portrait of Ruin, I'll be happy. ^_^

I had a harder time getting into Ecclesia. I <3 Portrait of Ruin. Portrait was one of the best handheld Castlevanias for me since it went into some of the lesser known history of the official canon with characters from Bloodlines. It was also the first game since Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse to revisit the character switching ability.

I guess i seem to be the only one who loves ecclesia so much T_T.... i wouldn't mind if they used Shanoa again in the future. or the 2 weapon system, i loved it a lot.

Hi there, um looks like this one maybe on...XBOX LIVE ARCADE!? with 6 PLAYERS!? O.o

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/30/rumor-castlevania-harmony-of-despair-2d-6-player-xbla-game/

oh and Snatcher's pic came from NEOGAF

Fans of the 2D brand of Castlevania adventuring may get the "HD" game they've been clamoring for with Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, which publisher Konami trademarked earlier this month.

According to a since-pulled report on Castlevania: Harmony of Despair at never know tech, Harmony of Despair is a multiplayer "Metroidvania"-style side-scrolling adventure, one that borrows its visuals from the numerous Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS Castlevanias.

The game also apparently borrows its cast from those titles, with screen shots indicating that Soma Cruz (Aria of Sorrow), Alucard (Symphony of the Night), Jonathan Morris (Portrait of Ruin), Shanoa (Order of Ecclesia), and Charlotte Aulin (Portrait of Ruin) will be playable. It also appears to be an Xbox Live Arcade game, based on the interface and Achievements.

While the original report is down, details from the apparent leak are still up at forum NeoGAF.

Re: CASTLEVANIA Harmony of Despair for XBLA?! *Update*

3rd source claims this:

Last month, a Konami trademark filing for "Harmony of Despair" surfaced, suggesting a brand new 2D Castlevania game was about to get subtitled. Now new reports show there is indeed a new 2D Castlevania game in the works, but it'll be a lot more elaborate than most were expecting: Castlevania: Harmony of Despair will evidently be a 2D, hi-definition, six-player Castlevania game for Xbox Live Arcade.

Lending credence to this rumor is the fact that these details are coming from two separate sources. First, never know tech posted a report on Harmony of Despair (which has since been pulled, but can still be read on NeoGAF), stating it'll have a multiplayer mode allowing six people to play together at the same time. The game will still be in the "Metroidvania" style of all recent 2D Castlevania games, and the playable characters revealed so far will come from the last few Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles: Soma Cruz (Aira of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow), Alucard (Symphony of the Night, and also unlockable in Dawn of Sorrow), Jonathan Morris and Charlotte Aulin (Portrait of Ruin), and Shanoa (Order of Ecclesia).

Weirdly, though (and somewhat disappointingly), the character sprites will evidently be the same as those used in the Nintendo DS games, with Harmony of Despair viewed with a "wide camera angle," letting players see more of their surrounding area than past 2D Castlevania games. On top of that, clicking the right analog stick also pops the view out to see the entire map, in lieu of the usual Castlevania map screen.

Second, Joystiq reports that a "trusted source" corroborated all of these details, as well as said Harmony of Despair will also feature a "versus, fighter-style" multiplayer mode. So while none of this is coming officially from Konami, it all seems pretty solid (especially considering that purportedly leaked screens from the game can also be seen in the NeoGAF thread, including what seems to be the title screen above). We'll consider this a rumor for now, but a rumor with a lot of momentum behind it...

The game, which features multiplayer gameplay with multiple Castlevania characters like Alucard and Soma Cruz, is being worked on by Koji Igarashi, the famous director of other revered Castlevania games like Symphony of the Night and Harmony of Dissonance.

Phew man, this has to be the weirdest CastleVania I have ever played.

But, is it fun?

Yes addictive and hauntingly fun

Here's the problems I've seen so far, for starters there's no tutorial on how to play. Each character isn't explained and no storyline what so ever. It's a race against the clock at 30 minutes. When you begin the camera will be fully zoomed out and you need to press the right stick to zoom in. It took me a while to figure this out, but whenever you find new equipment, you must find a checkpoint and quickly change since the clock does not stop for you. 6 player co-op and survival mode are ready to go. Actually the entire session I played feels like survival mode. Objective is get to the boss within 30 minutes. Yet, you are very weak and it's nearly impossible to take on the boss by yourself. The maps are very well designed (6 in total). The major advantage is if you die, you get to keep everything you find, and there's a shop on the side to sell or buy new goods. It's trial and error a majority of the time when I kept thinking this way is not the correct and vice-versa. So the more you try, you will find yourself getting stronger. I've been stuck on the first boss for a while now and would give anything for some help. :(

Soundtrack rocks and all your favorite playable characters from Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Symphony of the Night, and Order of Ecclesia are here. 6 players going all over the map is beautiful.

2nd update and another opinion: After reaching Stage 3 (Which is evil beyond ALL MEANS) Every character you play as has his/her unique abilities we remember well, earning them is a different story all together. I met one British guy playing as Alucard and was able to morph into a wolf instead of Mist. The game is really fun, but you really need team work and more players. Solo is just downright frustrating. The price tag being $15 urks some, but then again some games are worth it. At least the difficulty has you returning back again and again, which I'm glad the game isn't a walk in the park. So there's no story? No biggie, most original CastleVania games never did explain much except you're a Vampire Killer. Here's your weapon, go nuts.

Re: CASTLEVANIA Harmony of Despair for XBLA. This Wednesday! (8/4/10)

DLC leaked. TWO more playable characters and a new level inspired by Portrait of Ruin!

Maria Renard from Rondo of Blood (younger, not the older from SOTN) and Julius Belmont from Aria of Sorrow!!

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/06/rumor-castlevania-harmony-of-despair-dlc-details-leaked/

Hm, this game is starting to warm up. I mean I would really like some fixes to the gameplay, but it's a nice gesture.

Well the Pyramid Level based off of Portrait of Ruin can be downloaded right now for 400 MS Points.

However, two characters were confirmed, but how about a 3rd?

Seasoned whipmaster Julius Belmont from Dawn of Sorrow, magic user Yoko Belnades from Dawn of Sorrow, and animal tamer Maria Renard (Rondo of Blood edition)
