Castro Resigns

After about 50 years in office, Fidel Castro has finally resigned as president of Cuba. His brother Raul will be taking his place.

Maybe now we can finally get rid of this stupid embargo.

Embargo? Oh right, I'd almost forgotten that, unlike your neighbours to the north, you Americans won't import goods from Cuba. I would feel sympathy for you but I've got to go pick up a box of Havana's finest at the depot. Cheers.

:lol

I heard about this in my World Cultures class. I don't know...Raul could be resuming what his brother did. If he doesn't...well....maybe US would open up trade again and Cuba can restore it's economy back.

Yeah, us Americans tend to hold a big grudge against those we gave a reason to harm us. >_>

Yeah, but most countries don't remember that nuclear war almost happened because of Cuba. Castro letting the Soviets park nukes within 90 miles of American soil was really not a good idea.

Personally, I see three scenarios. I see Raul softening the communist rule and opening diplomatic relations (when Bush leaves office) with the U.S. Or I see Raul doing what Stalin did when he took over and consolidated his rule by eliminating political rivals and those close to Fidel. Or he somehow continues the status quo. Which will be extremely difficult being that the people are used to Fidel.

Which happened because we alienated the Cubans with the embargo.

Wow, he was in power twice as long as I have even been alive. o_O

Fidel brother Raul is just as bad as Fidel there will be no change but the good thing is Raul is 70 and in bad health so he may die soon :lol

There is also the possibility that the military will seize control at some point.

Yep. Then Miami will have a surge of immigrants seeking political assylum.

Nah. I am sure that not annexing the island to make it a US territory after the Spanish-American War started the alienation process. After all, we helped them get rid of Spanish rule and did what the U.S has a habit of doing, we packed up our toys and left.

Or it could be the Bay of Pigs incident. I can't remember if it was before or after the nuclear "incident." But I bet that upset a few people.

Or it could be Guantanimo Bay. You know, we force a lease on it, which the payments the Cuban government still refuses. We park a bunch of naval gear on their land and act like everything's okay. I think it would be dating the sister of the guy you hate the most in highschool just to spite him in a way. It's all stupid. I think the embargo should be lifted. Who cares who is in power anyway? Nations have the choice as to how they govern themselves...

That did cause considerable anger among Cuban citizens, as most had strong ties with Spain, and essentially considered themselves another province of it. There wasn't exactly a lot of Cuban nationalism when we "liberated" Cuba from Spain. Most were completely content being a part of it.

That was two years before the Cuban Missie Crisis, and only served to push the Cubans closer to the Soviets.

Yeah, that's also true.

I get what you're trying to say here. The relationship between us and Cuba can't really be summed up by a single event. It's more complicated than that, and I agree with you there too. A lot of stuff has happened, and I think maybe saying that one side was unequivocally wrong isn't something that can be done if you want an accurate view of the entire situation.

I think this is the longest post I've made, responding to something I agree with completely. :lol
