Hello Fellow Gamers,

In your opinion, how important of a role do cinematics play in a video game?Do you think all genres should have them?

God bless

No, all genres should not have them. I don't need amazing cinematics in my platformers or racers. If it's got a good story basis, give it good ingame cinematics.

I love cut scenes in games. Some of the best games I've ever played were played for the express purpose of seeing the next cut scene, furthering the narrative, and so on.

I like cinematics that look better than the game when you're playing it, like FF7 for example (FMV's they are called possibly?). Nowadays games seem to try to make cutscenes more interactive and so on, which can be done well, but I would rather have really polished models move around a staged performance that is cinematic, instead of the developer relying on me to look in the right direction at the right time to frame the shot the way that will give it the most impact.

As Half-Life has demonstrated, a game without cinematics that never takes control of the game away from the player is often more immersive than one that presents the story through a bunch of pre-rendered scenes. Cutscenes can often detract from a game, if anything.

I thought it proved the opposite, actually. :lol

The cut scenes that I enjoyed the most were the ones that were pre-rendered. I think in Episode 1 or 2 there were occasionally cinematics that were not in-game, and I found those to be the most entertaining and enjoyable. But I think that enjoyment extends into how I play games as well. For example, I like 3rd person perspective much better than first because you actually get to see what's happening to your character. In Gears of War you see the bullets whizz right by you as you run from cover to cover. It looks incredible and translates to you exactly what is happening. If that was done in first person you wouldn't be aware of the bullets whizzing past you, except through sound, and for that reason I think it is much better to see what is happening to your character.

Therefore I have no problem with pre-rendered cut scenes. They look great and they take advantage of actual cinematography, and by seeing your character react to the situation its much easier to identify with them. In that way, I think pre-rendered cinematics actually immerse you more into the world of the characters than an in-game cinematic where you don't even have to see what you're supposed to does.
