compatibility and older games

First of all are you going to play a game that is going to be online? Because if not then I dont think you really need to worry about the security features. Also is the game not working at all or is it not working at its full potential?

my hope is to be able to play online yes. the game works and actually, i right clicked on desktop/properties/settings/advanced/troubleshoot and scrolled down the acceleration so that all DirectDraw and Direct 3D accelerations, as well as all cursor and advanced drawing accelerations were disabled. This has fixed my cursor from freezing in the debriefing lobby, but the cursor leaves a trail instead. lol the graphics look like crap and i run around faster than usual. and online game warps madly
 
I've played Rogue Spear many a time on my gaming rig. Granted that I don't quite have the graphics card you do (9800 Pro) it should still run on what you have. Make sure to get all the latest patches for everything (Rogue Spear, graphics card, mobo, etc.)
 
ya, i've got all the latest patches...someone told me on another forum that if i had win98 then got the win xp upgrade version things would work out, what do you guys think
 
actually... I do not recommend the upgrade.

Fresh XP installs are the best IMO. Reason? In my operating system / network securities courses.... they always talked about doing fresh installs. The upgrades tend to miss somethings..... there can be compatibility problems with 98-xp aps.... and it can be a nightmare.

XP has updated drivers, and sometimes the 98 drivers (after upgrading) didn't work right causing program crashes.

I have never done an xp upgrade. Only fresh installs.

Yes I second the full fresh install. It can help make your system run a lot smoother and quicker. And I also recommend using a second hard drive for all your files like Pictures, mp3's, etc. Takes the strain off your first hard drive.
 
Thats what I do.  I have 1 drive for my OS and Programs such as excel.
I have a second hard drive for games.

In the future, I will be running 3 hard drives... 1 for the OS and ONLY the OS, 1 for programs such as office / word / graphics programs, and then my games drive

Keeps things organized, clean, and with the right usage.  My OS will be on a 10,000 RPM SATA 36 gig drive.  Thats all I'll run when I build a new comp in 1 - 2 years
I like the Western Digital Raptor Hard drives.  36 gig for the os, 74 gig (or if they have larger ones by then) for my programs / games drives.

I recommend Seagates. Very reliable and fast. I have an 80 gig for my OS and applications. A 160 gig for all my graphic design and 3d modeling files. With the right hard drives you can make your system faster and more reliable. When I finish my rig Ill have one 40 gig for the OS, one 20 gig for music, pictures, and all other misc. files. And an 80 gig for my 3D stuff.
 
seagate drives are not bad at all.    I just personally prefer Western Digital.
As far as I have seen, the WD Raptor is the only SATA 10K RPM drive on the market that is easily accessible.. maybe I am wrong as I haven't checked for a few months now.

Right now in my machine, I run an 80 gig and a 120 gig, and then I have 3 external Rocket Pod Drives:
2x 80 gig and 1 x 250 gig.  (for backing up our sites and system..etc).

They are cool. I have a dockpod as well that allows me to stack up to 5 more devices off of 1 USB cable and 1 power cable

Maxtor also make good drives, but are a little more expensive. I have no experience with western digital so I cant comment on them, but Ill check them out when I begin to build my rig.

ya thats what i've been hearing on other forums too sounds like a bad idea. thx guys

well.. Maxtors are SUPPOSIVELY built better with better parts. At least thats what people are stating.
My buddy won't use anything but Maxtor.

Other people hate Western Digital.
I love them... never had any problems. IF you do build with the WD drives... think about building your rig with SATA... and look at the 10000 RPM Raptors.


@ FIVE Yeah... that is a good idea :) just backup and install from scratch. BTW.... I always install NTFS file system.. as its a bit more secure than FAT.

But from what I can tell, I believe there is no way to get your game from running on the hardware simply because its old. Maybe if there is some kind of hack, but im not sure. Hopefully somebody else on this forum can help.
