The Memory Stick Pro Duos used in PSPs were also proprietary and quite expensive when the PSP first came out. MSPDs are cheaper now but still have higher prices than SD cards and are pretty much only used in Sony products. So I am not surprised that it's the same story with the PS Vita. Enough people still buy things at ridiculous prices that Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Apple, etc. can get away with it.
