Dell drops XPS gaming systems. Leaves Alienware to the job.

This is somewhat of a kick in the groin for me. I had found a great deal on an XPS where I was essentially paying the same price as I would for the same parts in a computer I built myself. Now, they're eliminating this line and handing things over to Alienware where they charge you $350 extra for a Core 2 Quad Q6600. The processor only costs $250 for Christ's sake. >_>

This basically clinches it though. Unless I can convince my parents to buy my new computer before they phase it out, I'm building my own. (not necessarily a bad thing)

Now wait... didn't Dell just buy Alienware?

Or maybe it's been awhile.

Yes, they did, quite a while ago. The thing is, Dell had their own series of gaming computers, the XPS's, and had Alienware's as well. Now they're just dropping their XPS's entirely and letting the Alienware half deal with gaming.

So Dell thought their XPS (way over priced in many aspects) are going to sell better just because they bought Alienware?

And now they are uncoupling the duo?

WTH didn't Dell offer an Alienware XPS system with some mutated case? They should brand it as Alienware by Dell. Milk the name Alienware... you bought it. As much as people do not agree with milking, if you pay for it, milk it. Make sure people know that it's legit Alienware.

But really... the XPS line is very expensive. I don't see it going away soon either. A tricked out XPS was fricking $7,200. Now... excuse me for being blunt... because I know someone (who overclocks and builds massive systems) is going to break out an ownage comment on me, why should a computer cost $7,200? I know, there will be many good reason... but seriously. I built a $900 computer recently, and it runs Unreal Tournament 3 at full. Same with Call of Duty 4. I am going to try Crysis soon and see. If I get this from a $900 computer, why would spend 8X that much for a massive system?

DISCLAIMER... This argument excludes high end rendering, or other notable professional positions that must have these type computers and benefit from them.

When was the last time you checked out the XPS line? I looked at it recently because I'm on the verge of getting a new computer and it was a far better value than any other high end pre-built computer. For about $1500 (with a coupon for 15% off I found online), you could build a quad-core, with an 8800 GTX and 4GB's of RAM. That's about the price I would pay for the parts for a pre-built rig of the same quality, and specs. (remember, I don't have a monitor, case, or anything else like that so I would have to start from scratch if I was building a new PC) It's the first time I haven't felt like a pre-built PC is ripping me off.

Alineware, on the other hand, will charge almost $400 extra to put a Core 2 Quad Q6600 in your computer, when you can buy the processor by itself for $250. >_>

A few times a week actually...

I just bought an xps laptop at the end of march.

CAn you link up what you can get @ dell for $1500? I want to see if we can get the same deals.

My quote of $7,200 was the high xps dekstop system... maxed out.

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DXCWCF1&s=dhs

Here is the model I chose, but the actual configuring isn't registered in the URL. I just changed the processor to a quad core Q6600, changed the graphics card to an 8800 GTX, picked the cheapest monitor, and changed the RAM to 4GB's Dual Channel DDR2. This brings the price to $1940, but enter the following code after adding it to the cart (BS4MQZFXHG6BFZ), and the price will drop 20% to about $1550.

Oh, okay, that makes sense. I can't imagine you would need 90% of the things that make up that computer though, unless you're using it for a very specific thing.
