Etrian Odyssey

Anybody here own/play Etrian Odyssey 1 or 2? I am really considering part 2, but would like to hear any opinions first. I hear they are super difficult games, but highly rewarding once mastered. Check the link if you never heard of them. Thanks!

Good to hear! I know Atlus did not make many copies, so don't wait too long! I've heard part 1 is already getting hard to find :-\

From what I understand, no. They are basically dungeon crawls and there is not any real storyline. Some people say 1 is a bit easier, but 2 is more polished overall. You can still find 1 online for around $50 which is not too bad, but as you know with Atlus games, that price can go up quick. 2 is still around $25-30 brand new which is all I can afford.

well if 1 is easier than 2 then i think i'll pick 2 and i know about Atlus's try to find a copy of trauma center under the knife 2 >_< good thing i bought it on release date

I would buy 2 right now but I am having to decide between that or Fire Emblem:Sacred Stones for GBA. I have never played a Fire Emblem game, and I can get Sacred Stones for $25 new.

sacred stones is the easiest of the fire emblem (but it has my least favorite story... not saying it's bad though) so it's a good one to start with

as for EO i think i saw it on my local gamestop recently, i am not sure if it was the first or the second

edit: i just checked on-line they have the second one on stock over here

Well, I just ordered Etrian Odyssey 2 after watching a few gameplay vid's on youtube. I think I'm going to love this game. I'll post up my thoughts of the game in this thread once I try it out.

Well I just got done playing the game for a bit and I think it is really good so far. It definitely is not for everybody, though. The game starts off with just a little story and after that you are given a small tutorial on how to set up your party and what not. You basically create all your characters from scratch to start with {you need to make at least 6 to enter the labyrinth}. You start by naming them, then choosing a class, then choosing their image. There seemed to be a good amount of classes to choose from which included healers, fighters, protectors, gunners, etc...After that you can go to the shop and buy some weapons and items. After that I went into the dungeon and after another small segment I started playing. The cool thing about this game is that you have to draw the map as you play, since it starts out blank. The map making is simple and intuitive; if the path leads straight, you draw a straight path, if there is a turn, you draw a turn, if there is an item, you drag and drop an item icon from the panel. Not too far into the dungeon I entered my first battle. This is where some people might be turned off as the battling is extremely old school {think old school Dragon Quest; turn based, 1st person view, no real enemy or player animations outside of shaking or slashing}. I don't mind this style of battling as I am used to it, but others may not appreciate it. Battles take place very fast, too, which is great since there will no doubt be level grinding. I think it's definitely worth a try if you want an old school dungeon crawler. The music is very nice, too :)

i played Dragon quest 1, 2 and earthbound /mother 1 so i think this battle system is not a problem for me at all
