Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls

Thus far, Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls is pretty good. I've put maybe 6 or 7 hours into Final Fantasy I so far and am really enjoying it. I won't say that it's better than Final Fantasy II (SNES), but so far it definitely has the feel of the early Final Fantasy games but has much better graphics and more balanced experience and money earning in comparison to the original NES Final Fantasy I. I'm definitely going to get a lot of play time in on this one. :D

I play this GBA cart more than anything else. It pretty much never leaves my DS. This is one of the best remakes of any 2D game, and with the new features, well worth the $30 price tag. I haven't finished FFI yet, but I've heard FFII is great as well.

I haven't been able to pick this up (no cash) but how good is it?

and only you 2 have played it? I figured tons more people would be all over it, you know?

†B†V† :hat

How good is it? Thus far (only playing FFI but not the FFII part), I'd say it's very comparable to Final Fantasy III on the SNES, minus the esper spell learning system.

The game is fun and engaging so far. It's a very nice remake!

I have it...I haven't even opened it yet though. I still have to get through some other games. And well...I really want to play Minish Cap first.

Experience and gold are set up to track with the gameplay better. You don't have to spend as much time simply fighting enemies for experience alone.

The spell system is on Magic/Mana Points (MP) instead of a set number of spells per level that you could cast.

The graphics and sound are brought up to standard for the GBA, looking much more like Final Fantasy II/III for the SNES.

Four bonus dungeons have been added (featuring some bosses from FF II/III SNES).

Those are just the changes in Final Fantasy I. I haven't gotten around to Final Fantasy II yet. Besides, I won't recognize changes in that since it was a Japanese Famicon release originally.

My only complaint with Final Fantasy 1 is that after you unlock the Earth Shrine (bonus dungeon), if you spend time in there, afterwords, the entire game is fighting enemies that offer no challenge.

The "black goblins" get annoying, not because they're difficult, but because they pop up in random enemy encounters, then run away leaving you with 1 experience and half a minute wasted.

Also, with the Judgement staff and Ragnarock casting Flare, there is no point to having a black mage. Go with Red mages instead for black magic since they also have a stronger melee attack. White mages are still very necessary for "Full Life" spells though.

Anyhow, I beat FF1, now it's on to FFII.

:? what'd they do to ff1?
i thought it was just going to be like origins re-released on gba
apparently not i guess?
i liked set number of spells, made me use even those low level ones sometimes :'(

They updated it. It plays more similarly to Final Fantasy III (SNES) now in my opinion.

If you like the Origins version better, stick with that.

It's definitely an entertaining game. The bonus dungeons definitely extend the length of the game too. The Whisperwind Cove dungeon is WAY deep though and you can't use the exit spell to opt out halfway through.

I'm getting into Minish Cap now, so might not finish FFII on Dawn of Souls for a while.

i was going to get it b/c ff's mean long play, plus i know i like it, so replay value, changes always make me awkward though :-/
