Final Fantasy V Advance

Okay, so, this game has been on my to-beat list for quite a while.

I started level grinding so I could get some job class abilities for all four characters. I have a few levels of knight and theif for the two guys. The two girls have theif, white mage, red mage, and summoner levels.

I was having a pretty easy time until I reached the boss guarding the engine of the ship that is sapping power from the fire crystal. This boss decimated my party within rounds... WHAT THE?! This is the type of boss that makes me want to throw my GBA.

yep that's final fantasy V for you... i actually have been playing this one recently and its difficulty surprised me, it is certainly more difficult than the other advance FF games. I don't remember the fire crystal boss though... i am already on world 2

It's pretty early in the game...

I beat that boss.. AFTER IT RAN OUT OF MP. Seriously, all you can do is survive until it burns itself out. When it takes the form of a flaming fist you cannot do damage to it... Worst programming for a boss I've seen in a long time...

Oh, and as soon as you beat the boss, you're given ten minutes to escape the burning castle WITH RANDOM ENEMY ENCOUNTERS...

I am VERY disappointed in the gameplay so far. I might have to put this down and put FFIV back in my GBA\SP.

I love FFV <3 My all time favorite of the series ^_^

Seriously? Better than FFIV or FFX? :\ I am certainly not sold on it. I was just saying moments ago that at this point I cannot see how the game can compare to those two.

Reason why? At the time, it was the first underdog FF game to me that was unknown. I love underdog games, because it's people like you that make me want to punch a puppy. Actually, I'm happier when I find a game that nobody else likes and it's part of a major franchise. Like Mega Man IV comes to mind. Final Fantasy X I cannot stand, no clue why honestly. FFIV is legendary, but if I had to have my own personal gems, it's Final Fantasy V and Secret of Mana. I waited so long when the PS1 port arrived and was very pleased to play this lost classic. I would NEVER compare them to FFIV or X by far, since it's way below. Yet to me, FFV is worth it.

Yeah, I have a lovely habit of lovely insane/obscure sequels. My favorite Super Mario game? Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels because I like the fact it's just a deluxe hard single player Mario game that was pretty much a middle finger to it's fans!

I will have to agree with mega that it is a pretty darn good game... and it was very overlooked, the job system is the best in the series and although the story is very simple its humor attracts me a lot.

one thing about FFV..... grinding it is not the solution, unlike other FF games grinding for higher levels it is not going to cut it, you actually have to know your enemy... for that particular boss i remember having a mystic swordman, black mage, white mage and a monk. the mystic/black attacked him with ice spells the white cured/restored mp/summoned shiva.. whenever he would turn into the fist i would just change my strategy to put the black mage on item duty and make my melee people attack.

the 10 minutes should be PLENTY of time to escape... i remember i had enough time to get all treasure and beat the boss at the end....

just play around with the job system a bit, make a combination that can help you succeed most situations, experiment and have fun... don't just dismiss the game because it is turning out to be more difficult than you thought. In fact I actually embrace the fact that FFV allows me to create my own strategy.

The only "underdog" Final Fantasy game Square made was the first one ^_^

Still, not played FFV so I'll reserve judgement. My fave FF games are VII, X and XII. My least favorite is VIII because it didn't have the usual Final Fantasy charm. Granted it's story was better then FFIX (which was told in such a haphazard "quick lets move on" kind of way") but only just.

Waiting for when they eventually port V and VI onto the DS, despite Sqaure Enix having problems doing so.

I guess I am early enough in the game that the job system is a little hard to grasp yet.

One of my favorite things about both Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy X is that the characters were different through most of the game. I rather disliked FFVI where every character could learn the same spells, which really left the strongest warriors also being mages. There was too little differentiation between characters.

What is frustrating thus far about FFV is that, though I am trying to get some variation of skill sets; white, black, red, and time mage skills along with warrior and thief skills, the party seemed ill prepared. Most enemies up until that boss were easily handled with strong warriors while letting the mages sit back to level. The boss really required the warriors use skills to enchant swords. Even with sword enchantments, they were still connecting few hits, as if they had no dexterity.

Perhaps I need to use a strategy guide to get more enjoyment out of the game so I am not caught unprepared for more battles like that. I am starting to see that much of the game will revolve around changing job classes to fit situations rather than creating a single multi-situation party.

actually that's one of the reasons why i didn't like FFVI either.... even when i tried to give different espers to different people they didn't feel unique....

with final fantasy V though i assign an equal number of jobs to everyone example bartz has the job of knight, mystic swordman, samurai and ranger. Galuf has black mage, red mage, blue mage and time mage... and what i also do its level up the job that requires the least amount of ABP to level up that way i get more abilities quicker yet everyone feels unique.

you don't have to do what i do though you can do whatever you want and experiment with as many jobs as you like that's the point of the game after all

Actually, a real black sheep of the series, that_guy would have to be Final Fantasy II on PS1/ GBA Dawn of Souls. That is still the oddest battle system ever.

indeed.... even i have a hard time getting into it... but i heard it is easier to exploit than other battle systems
