GameStop...a necessary evil?

I'm resurrecting this thread to explain my experience when picking up LittleBigPlanet and what a clusterfart it truly was.

I walk in with some games to trade in, in order to pick up my game. I was waiting in line for a good 13 minutes, since he was the only man on duty. Which is rather sad during a 12pm rush. I've been in that situation when working for GameCrazy. Cheap budget, equals less workers on the payroll.

Anyways, the prices they gave me for the following games was downright disgusting.

$3.30 for Mortal Kombat Armageddon for PS2? Good Lord, my store gives $9.71 Credit. especially for a game that will be turned around and sold for $17.95 + Tax. At least give the consumers a half deal for godsakes!

So I had this "Edge Card" with me from the last time I was there. Which was given to me because I had $7.01 left over.

Well I was pretty content that I was finally getting LittleBigPlanet, but a part of me felt like this was a freakin' headache on GameStop's part and Sony's part. Being with all the recent media issues and everyone in retail being forced to send it back, when we all knew the final product was finished.

Simply because they didn't call me, felt it was little unorthodox. I mean, the one thing I have to say positive about GameStop. If you pre-ordered, they WILL call you. At least I thought so, on a big budget title like this.

Now here's the part where it gets dishonest, the guy does not inform me that he is about to use my credit to give me a magazine subscription without my consent. He throws the magazines in the bag and hands me the card. I look and the receipt says $14.99 Game Informer.

Okay excuse me while I say this.

WHAT THE &^#&!?!

I was literally pissed, how could you do that to a customer without saying jack? I didn't know this happened until AFTER the transaction was through.

I feel bad for those employees at GameStop.

A necessary Evil? At times, yes. Which is really...I mean...REALLY sad. How a company has such a stronghold on the market and still screws everyone they see, is beyond me.

Their pre-order bonuses are really a joke, after hearing Zidart's troubles on obtaining a CastleVania soundtrack, I've literally had it with them. They screwed me on Lego Batman pre-order bonus, so no more. I'm offically washing my hands of them.

My only complaints with GS are 1. The stickers on the new and used game boxes (unless you get a new game right around launch) and 2. Their policy of opening games and taking them out and selling them as "new".

I've got a story from those guys. As I said in my post introducing myself, I work at the same store MegaDrive20XX works at. I had a 360 controller that had a left stick that somehow started always drifting slightly to the left if nudged in that direction, then staying that way unless I move it back. So I decided to shovel it off on good ol' Gamestop. They gave me $18 in credit for it, so I put it all toward a pre-book on Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. I pre-ordered it there for 2 reasons: I thought our store would not be getting the cards that let you download the XBLA Banjo Kazooie for free (which we ended up getting in later) and because there was no way I was using that on their used games, they don't take good care of them. So today was the day they got the game.

Yesterday, after I got out of class, I checked my phone and noticed I had a missed call from a number I didn't know. I called it back and it was an automated voice saying they left me a message about a pre-booked game that came in. I then noticed I had a voice mail. Now that voice mail was creepy. It was an automated girl that sounded like she had way too much caffeine saying that Nuts and Bolts would be in today. I went in to pick it up, and when I got in the store, they asked me what I needed, so I told them. They then said to "Hold on a sec" because there were already 3 people there in line. Well, one of them was only trading in a couple of games, which was not so bad, but the other 2 had duffel bags full of games. Before they got to me, they went through every game in the duffel bags, instead of breaking and just quickly checking me out, then getting back to the bags. At the store I work at, if we have a trade-in like that, and another customer just wants to buy 1 game, we put the trade-in on hold, check them out, and get back to the trade in. Gamestop does not seem to grasp this concept. I was standing there for about 10 minutes and they were finally done with the duffel bags. I bought the game, they tried to throw the standard "Do you want to reserve all these games? Left 4 Dead? Prince of Persia?" I responded with the usual no. I got the game, and left the store, realizing in the car that they didn't give me the card to download the XBLA Banjo. While I don't care too much since I got the card before from another source, it really makes me mad that they pull stuff like that. I'll probably call them tomorrow and find out why I didn't get a card, and see if they remedy that situation.

The bottom line is, unless I'm trading something in there that I can't trade in at my own store, I'm not doing business with those guys, I don't care how good the pre-order bonuses are. Mega's experience and this one definitely make me not want to go there again.

There is one (out of like 5 within 10 minutes of my house) that I do enjoy going to, that have employees that actually like to talk about video games.

Still hate the place though. :lol

So pretty! :o

Dude, I'm not taking sides on this Gamestop thing, I just go and buy games. I don't care where get them, as long as I get them. :/

No Jill! Umbrella must be STOPPED! :'(

I'm bumping this, because I just saw a TV ad for a pre-order of the new GTA for DS. The pre-order bonus is to give you the cheat code to start with $10,000 and the best guns in the game!?

What is GameStop teaching here?? This is the stupidest excuse to buy a game if you're going to cheat this quickly.

Yes, I am aware of GTA's history of codes, yet just giving people that advantage straight off the bat? Shame on your GameStop! Sure selling a guide book is logic, but giving a CHEAT CODE like this? Pfft.

We should start the "Gamestop Anonymous" thread :lol

I haven't shopped at Gamestop for 2 years... and the cravings are gone.

†B†V† :hat

I hate Gamestop and I am sad that it is indeed a necessary Evil sometimes.... the third time i pre-order something with a bonus on gamestop and the third time that they forgot to give me my bonus... of course i reminded them about it but it took them 10 minutes to find it and i would not leave the store without my fire emblem bonus.

I love gamestop I used to be like you guys until a spent 1 year living in small town with truely terrible video game store in it. It was localy owned store terrible selection, they I had one week return policy everthing was overpriced, out of the 10 games I got from 3 didn't work at all and they would only give me store credit.

Oh okay, when you said "small businesses" I assumed it was somewhere in the midwest or near the southern east coast. Many small video game businesses are within those areas.

Yet, I understand what you mean. As much as I hate them, they always have the one or two new game I'm after. Plus they have nice incentives for you usually for pre-ordering.

Well Mega she had no supplier for games she just sold the stuff that came into store through trade from what I understood. Well I know another used video game up in NW Ohio that's pretty good but the guy also hits fleamarkets and pays in cash so he actauly gets some decent stuff.
