GameStop sells played games as new, sources say, practice could be illegal.

Is what gamestop is doing wrong?

  • Absolutely! New games should be considered sealed and untouched!

  • No! As long as the game is in mint/near mint condition, I'm fine with them playing it.

Well, I might as well be a sucker than be picky. :/

@GM and X2. Well when I mean sucker, you're putting yourselves at risk of returning to GameStop.

X2 pointed out that he has to travel 40 miles to return the game.

I live 30 minutes from Waco. I don't mind traveling 25-30 miles. I used to live in Whitney, TX. Which is 40 miles from Waco. I traveled on a daily basis to Waco to get anything I needed, because there is jack-squat in Whitney. Fact is, I've been down that road literally. Alrington Texas for example, I lived there for 3 years as well. They only GameStop, 3 of them and 1 mom/pop business. So I had no choice

Did I forget to mention, I was a former employee of GameStop and saw how many crooked things they did behind customers back for 2 years? 2001-2002.

Now why a sucker born every minute? When I see a customer return for the second or third time to swap out the game because it does not work. That's the sucker I see in you guys.

GameStop has no way of testing the games or even making sure they work for you. So you are being the hamsters for their sick experiments. Those employees are getting crap pay and you're doing the smarter work. Testing the games on your own dollar. Is that fair? No. Is it worth wasting your gas in your car to travel back up there because of that? Definitely not.

So the next time you think I'm being picky for no reason, you have to see the hell I've been through in the past 10 years.

Not just GameStop, not just GameCrazy, yet even at Mom/Pop businesses. It's all corrupted and nobody cares until the customer is outraged from making numerous trips within the week for just 1 problem. THUS, A sucker is born every minute in the eyes of used video game retail, to make my point clear.

I honestly don't like this... if I'm buying a new game, then I'm buying a game that has not been touched by a human yet. I am the sole user of the game until I decide otherwise... that's the point of getting something new. I can understand that the employees would like to be able to gain information on the games... but why not just get copies from the devs, or even just have GameStop take the hit by selling the game used? Then it's truthful... because when it's been played, even by someone who works there, then it's not new; it's used.

I go to Gamestop. I buy games there. I have never had a problem that was within the store's responsibility (I had to return a game one time, but there was absolutely nothing wrong with the disc and it was a game that I searched and it wasn't uncommon to have defective discs). So shoot me. And I like suckers.

Who said anything about it being uncommon to have defective discs?

Sure you never had any problems, but what about the rest of the consumers?

You can't really disagree with me, I'm just the messenger boy. I care about people, especially you guys, and I'm tired of them, you, and I being screwed on a daily basis.

When you guys are being treated as suckers. It burns me, to see each and every one of you being treated like this.

10 long years I have spent, seeing customers shrugged off, toyed with, and not even take care of.

I am a man, who strongly believes in, "Your word is your bond". Lately, I don't see that anymore.

So don't tell me I'm getting worked up about it, when it's been a frustrating 10 years for me.

If you think I'm calling you all suckers, is because you need to open your eyes, and see the truth before you. Do not think I am insulting you, because you are dead wrong.

I am sorry to anyone who cannot see what I have seen, yet I respect everyone's point of view in this thread. Yet, you should do the same for I.

Fact is, you need to stand up for what is right for you, as the consumer, of what you want. Not what some big shot corporate wants to sell you.

I don't think the whole "you'll never know the difference" argument applies. I could say the same about someone spitting in my food at a restaurant when I go out to eat. It won't hurt me and I won't know, but does that make it ok? Hell no. Just because the consumer won't know they got screwed doesn't make it ok to screw them over.

Comparing a disc that had been used for a couple hours to a meal that had been spit in? lol seriously? You honestly think the consumer is screwed because a game was played for a couple hours?

If paying new price for a game that an employee has played for acouple hours is what you consider to be getting screwed then all I can say is I wished had your life I really do.

Just that I have been royaly screwed few times had acouple of employers try to both cheat out money they owed to me and delay payment to the point I didn't have the money to pay my bills or for food after that this sort of thing seem kind of trivial to me.

Really? How about an ironic story of an FX Video Game manager who forgot to file the proper paper work for an employee's W-2s and lost that money. So now the IRS thinks the employee is avoiding them to pay his child support? When it was really the manager's fault?

No matter what form of business you go into, your problems can happen else where. I'm sorry it had to happen to you.

In fact, just recently this week. I met an employee of another mom/pop ran game business who wasn't paid for 2 weeks. He's still fighting for that money!

There is no reason Gamestop should be gutting packages of games in the first place. There are 3 simple solutions that they could do, or that they're distributor could do.

A. Have the distributor send an extra empty box or 2 with each game, meant for display purposes. Have it include the instructions, because some people like to look at those when browsing at Gamestop. Probably the first counter to this is "It costs too much money" Don't give me that excuse. You've seen all the flashy displays, posters, and all the stuff Gamestop has advertising their products in the store. There is no way they would not be able to afford this.

B. Sell the gutted games at a discounted price. This one explains itself.

C. Just keep the new games sealed behind the counter, and have the used games gutted packages out in the rest of the store. The shelves will still look full, trust me.

When I do buy from Gamestop (or any store like that) I always make sure to get a sealed copy. I don't even bother with Gamestop's used games, but that's just me. At the store I worked at, the manager was allowed to borrow new games. While he did take care of them, I would hate to be the person that buys the copies of games he borrowed and played. The rest of us were allowed to borrow used games, which was understandable, BECAUSE THEY ARE USED.

Like I said before, I always buy a sealed game if I buy a new game from Gamestop. An opened game is like a slap in the face. Gamestop could easily put a stop to this, getting rid of all the possible legal troubles for them, and getting rid of angry customers, but no, they just want to rip people off.

It's not that people aren't seeing your point of view, I think it's that, simply put, it's just not that big of a deal for most of us. And even if it were, I'm curious as to what we could even realistically do about it?

Yeah, but I don't see it as ripping people off. That's just me though. If you're over-meticulous about your games, then I can see if you'd see it as a slap in the face. But, as long as the game has no scratches, and the case is in new condition, the game is new to me, and deserves full price.

Sadly, nothing. They're grown too big for us to do anything at all.

I know it's not that much of a big deal to a majority of you guys. Yet I respect that.

Mega who know's maybe things will change now that a case is being brought against Gamestop about this while I'm really not upset over this policy but I would prefer if it wasn't going on.

GameStop's not the only place that sells video games, either. Even the smallest towns usually have a Wal-Mart nearby.

And some 7-Elevens even sell video games.
