GameStop sells played games as new, sources say, practice could be illegal.

Is what gamestop is doing wrong?

  • Absolutely! New games should be considered sealed and untouched!

  • No! As long as the game is in mint/near mint condition, I'm fine with them playing it.

There is no reason Gamestop should be gutting packages of games in the first place. There are 3 simple solutions that they could do, or that they're distributor could do.

A. Have the distributor send an extra empty box or 2 with each game, meant for display purposes. Have it include the instructions, because some people like to look at those when browsing at Gamestop. Probably the first counter to this is "It costs too much money" Don't give me that excuse. You've seen all the flashy displays, posters, and all the stuff Gamestop has advertising their products in the store. There is no way they would not be able to afford this.

That I can agree with. When I worked at GameStop, they sent us TONS of marketing all the time. We had box art up the wazoo for nearly every upcoming release, even the really obscure games. I don't think it would actually cost that much more for them to implement using marketing materials instead of gut copies in order to display what they have in stock.

Could be a problem? or illegal.

IMO IT IS illegal. I see this being a problem with gaming companies as well... and I hope action is taken against Game Stop. There are many Game Stop issues I am not cool with. And the only "unopened new game for sale" should be IF the last display model copy is left... as long as GameStop tells the consumer it is opened. I totaly agree GameStop has the right to have a display box.

It is bad enough that Gamestop removes so-called "new" games from packaging to prevent shoplifting or some such nonsense. If I buy a "new" game, I want it factory sealed and WITHOUT all the sticky-goo-greasy-unbathed-gamestop-gaming-dork grime covering it. Those price stickers are a pain to get off of the package as well!

Then again, they even sell their "used" games for $1-2 off the "new and sealed" price you'd pay at say, a department store, for the same game.

And, just as a note, games from egameaddiction.com are painstakingly inspected for condition... New & Sealed means just that.
