Last gen, the lowest selling system(GCN) sold 21 million units after five/six years. A year into this console war, and two systems have nearly reached the 20 million mark.
And what was different from the beginning of the last console race to this one? PS2 didn't have 130 million units sold at the beginning.Homicidal Cherry53 said:No, we aren't in a "gaming big bang". It's just that the race is much more open this time around. The last two generations have been dominated by a single console, with other consoles having paltry sales, by comparison. This has changed this generation, which is why we have two consoles nearing 20 million already.
The PS2 came out a year before the other consoles, got a huge sales jump on them, and had a couple key games launch right around the time their competitors (other than the Dreamcast) came out (FFX anyone?). This gave them huge amounts of momentum, and really hurt the sales of the other consoles. This meant more games would be produced for the PS2, than the other two, and drive up sales even more. Sony basically had the generation a couple years after the PS2's launch.fhqwhgads said:And what was different from the beginning of the last console race to this one? You flipped around 360 and PS3 in that, from what I can tell.Homicidal Cherry53 said:This time around, things are far different, as the 360 wasn't able to carry its momentum over as effectively as the PS2 did. This allowed the Wii and PS3 to gain significant ground on it, and thus, we have a far more competitive generation.
No, I didn't. The 360 was the early console, like the PS2, and had an early lead, like the PS2. Unlike the PS2, it didn't maintain momentum, so the PS3 and Wii have cut down substantially on its lead.fhqwhgads said:You flipped around 360 and PS3 in that, from what I can tell.
Oh, oh, I get it. But the Wii, to be fair, was immensely propelled by hype after E3.Homicidal Cherry53 said:No, I didn't. I'm basing it off of the PS2's release in 2000, to the 2006 release of the PS3/Wii, as the last gen, and I'm counting from the 360's release in 2005, to now, in early 2008. So, we've got a third of the sales, in a third of the time.fhqwhgads said:Actually, seems we've got a third of the sales in a sixth of the time. Unless you're talking from the first console release, as opposed to at least two being out.
