I've been hearing really awesome things about the God of War demo, so I picked a demo up. I haven't played it yet, but I'll post my impressions.

Everyone on IGN loves it though. I'm excited to try it. It's supposed to be kind of like Ninja Gaiden mixed with Devil May Cry mixed with other stuff.

Has anyone else played the demo already, or even heard about this game? Anyone planning on getting it?
 
I played a bit of the demo and so far it's ok, not great.

It starts off really slow and kind of boring. I was playing it and thinking that the people who are excited about it must not have played Ninja Gaiden (XBOX), because it feels a lot like NG as far as the combos and stuff.

I also had issues with the PS2 controller because of the circle button. There's a boss fight in the demo where part of it asks you to press circle, and I had to stop and look at the controller because I couldn't remember where circle was.  :p After I died a bunch of times, I finally memorized where circle was. Basically the boss battles are kind of like the ones in RE4...you do a certain amount of damage with regular attacks, and then you have to do a sequence of actions as dictated by what's on screen.

Something God of War does that I haven't seen in any games I've played is this part where you're climbing up a rope mast on a big ship, and you can pull enemies off of it and throw them behind you, or if they are beside you when you grab them, you bang their heads against the rope. It's pretty cool.

I haven't finished the demo yet, but other than the rope thing it feels to me like too much of a rip-off of Ninja Gaiden, only without the wall running. I'm interested, but probably not enough to buy it right when it comes out. I'll post back some more impressions though after I finish the demo.
 
i got it a while ago in the mail, but haven't tried it. is it that much closer to NG than the DMC series?
 
Yeah, I have to definitely give the demo another run. This game is getting really terrific scores from pretty much everyone. Game Informer gave it a perfect 10, Play gave it a 9.5, and EGM gave it 10, 10, and 9.5.

I'm still not that impressed with the combat system, but I'm very intrigued by the Greek mythology storyline. I think it's probably worth playing through just for that.

Ok, so here's the thing. I had a chance to borrow the full version of God of War, and after playing for two hours, I love it!! The demo really doesn't give it justice, IMO.

The combat system gets really deep as you get more power-ups (love that Medusa spell ;) ) and it's just great fun to tear apart the bad guys. And when you kill the enemies certain ways, they give you different rewards than if you just kill them with regular attacks. Like the gorgons: if you rip their heads off, you get more magic orbs. There's also minotaurs and hydras and other cool Greek mythological beasts.

I'm really glad I gave it another chance, because I would have missed out on a really cool game if I hadn't. I will definitely pick it up once I can afford to. :)
 
I started playing this yesterday, and I wish I had sooner. I was worried that I would find it overhyped, but so far it's definately deserved the praise it's gotten, excellent game.
 
I want God of War! But I don't know if its on X-box. If it is, you can be sure i'll get it when my 360 comes in. (just hope x-box games can be used on 360)
 
It's not. Only on the PS2. It's a good enough game for some of my friends to buy a PS2 for the sole purpose of playing this game.
 
I'm in Athens, the part where you gotta save the girl who's hanging from a rope...there's that climbing part you reach, but it's too high to jump up to.

Go towards the left and use the statues. (move them over there)

If this doesn't help, then I'll go back and find a way for you.
 
I finally purchasd this game yesterday. It's the Greatest Hits, but it was $20. I haven't played it yet because my PS2 is packed away and will stay that way until I reach North Carolina...
