Some people just don't like the whole 'style' of the game, myself included.
I guess I kind of look at GTA IV differently or something, because the game itself can be played, in any number of ways, according to your own personal style. The single player missions have their own style (like that of a mob, underground, organized crime, gangster flick) but you can play GTA IV for a very long time without every completing more than a couple missions. The amount of game modes you can enjoy in GTA IV is incredible, from the mini games like darts, bowling, and pool, to the opportunities for making money legally (more so), like driving a cab or doing street races. And then once you put your own imagination into the mix, all sorts of other options open up. With the amount of tools available to you in GTA IV, you can play the game the way you want. Hell, you can just hang out and cruise around New York/Liberty City like you would if you were actually there.
And then there's GTA IV's multiplayer which, with all the different game modes it has, lets you experience a whole new set of game types and play styles.
I dunno, maybe if you could elaborate on GTA IV's style a little bit more I'd have a better understanding of what you mean. Aside from the depiction of New York as reaslistically as possible as Liberty City, the game doesn't have any other major aesthetic style, so I don't know why that would deter you from playing it.
