I have a serious problem...

I downloaded Minecraft two days ago on the advice of my roommate. I haven't been able to stop playing it and thinking about it when I'm not playing it since. Has anyone else discovered the ridiculously amazing time sink that is Minecraft?

Also, anyone have any sweet stories about all-nighters/gaming marathons/games that utterly consumed you?

The first night I played Minecraft I built a castle, on a mountain, and then dug a spiral staircase from the top of the mountain to the bottom, where my roommate had created a crafting emporium, and had excavated the majority of that which lay beneath the mountain. Two of us accomplished this in one night. I have since created a watchtower that literally touches the clouds, and a staircase from sea level that leads directly to a hovering land bridge in the sky. I mean, my God!

Just looking up info on this game tells me that I don't want to get sucked in. And I think this picture explains why...

But yes, I get shamelessly addicted to games easily. My current vice is the Professor Layton games, one of which is coming out over here next week. *sigh*

I'm about to be in the same situation. I got the game a week ago but haven't had the time to sit down with it for an extended period of time.

I have however planned out two mining shafts, a mountain expansion, a greenhouse, expanding my little house into a castle and a watchtower and will probably spend the weekend doing it. What I have played has been incredibly addictive and I can see myself getting completely engrossed in the game.

Yes! More people on the Minecraft Bandwagon!!!! I love adventuring in Minecraft alone. I got lost in a Cave for over 3 hours, went back to mine-shaft del Frod to better equip myself for escavating Iron and hopefully diamond. I haven't started building awesome things yet, but I plan to build an underwater retreat, a farm, a greenhouse and maybe a castle. Minecraft may just be the greatest game of 2010.

Also some of the stuff people are doing in this game is ridiculous! Someone's building a working computer inside the game itself.

O.o *goes to try it*

Edit:

I only played a couple mins of it, but it's probably cause I just got out of a 12 hour shift, but I don't get what's cool with running around and putting down blocks :lol

Minecraft is an awesome time killer.

And what's hysterical, is that not long after I got it and got my friends then to play it, that those in my class now all play it too. It's infected us all.

In the 60 odd hours I've played it, I've got nurmerous caverns, man-forged tunnels, paths, towns, castles, towers, even a mountain I built from the sea level up and made it spew lava, which I then dug into the mountain and made an underwater laboratory. o.o

I read up on it in GI and I guess its just a sandbox game where you can create all kinds of things

Minecraft... for the PC? It sounds cool, but what exactly IS it?

Mining and crafting, but so much more!

Basically, the world you inhabit is made up of blocks, which you mine for raw materials, craft into tools/weapons/other kinds of blocks, and then terraform the world to your liking. Every single block that makes up the world is totally movable and changeable, so you just sort of change the world to how you want it to be.

Also, the deeper you mine, the more rare materials you can get. So there is a kind of science and pleasure to building mine shafts, tunnels, and infrastructure to make obtaining these materials easier. But ultimately, for me, the mining is just a means to an end. it's the building that really sells the game for me. Think of Lego, but on a scale that is virtually unimaginable. I built a pyramid out of sand and soil so far inland that just getting sand from the beaches involved a 5 minute trek both ways. I had to cut into mountains on three sides, to make room for it. It took me a good 6-8 hours of dedication to get that sucker finished, but now there's a gigantic sand pyramid in between the medieval stone towers I built on the mountain tops that surround it. I'm now thinking about hollowing it out, lighting it with a series of torches (I estimate 150-200 in total), and making some statues or other structures inside.

That's what minecraft is.

6-8 hours? How much free time do you have, man? xD

When you Minecraft, time is but an illusion.

I'm more on the Adventure/Mining part of Minecraft. Building stuff right now doesn't appeal to me. Though stuff like this makes my mind melt:

Yeah. You'd be surprised how many hours you'll sacrifice to put into Minecraft. Beware, if you value your social life, school/work life, and, well, any other kind of life at all, this game will put all of that in jeopardy.

You guys still play this? I actually saw it in action for the first time only last week. My buddy was showing me his little underground lair he was creating underneath some dudes castle.

I can say that this is probably not my thing at all. I'm not really sure if I see the point. No way to win. :p

:lol it's not about winning.. it's about creating. Creating something cool = win. Winning can be equated to created something really cool in the game IMO :lol

BV :hat

am i the only one who thinks minecraft is a waste of time? :lol

No, I think it's a waste of *my* time.
I do however, enjoy seeing what other people have made whilst wasting *their* time. lol

My God, I got an account (finally, after playing a few games on a friend's account way back) and I have been addicted all week. It's insane.

I've probably spent 75% of the last 5 days (real time) playing Minecraft.
I haven't built anything super awesome yet, but me and my friends have a nice two-story house with a pool on the roof, and a tree house across from it… it's pretty sweet.

And yeah, some people just don't like Minecraft. I can understand why. But I wonder if these people have ever really played the game. Once you play it for an hour and learn the basics of crafting and how to do certain things, etc, it just sucks you in and you CANNOT get back out… O.o

I'm sure it does, which is precisely why I don't think I'll play it. Same reason I won't play WoW.
I know I would be overly addicted to games like those, and would end up wasting my time. I just wouldn't care after I started playing. :lol
