Identifying Yourself As A Lesbian Gets You Banned On XBOX Live

Poor girl, here's her story :(

(Former) Xbox Live gamer Teresa found herself on the receiving end of a ban from the service for a surprising reason. She identified herself as a lesbian in her Live profile.

That resulted in a ban from the service after her Xbox Live peers complained about her profile, according to a letter to the Consumerist.

It's not like we haven't heard this before. Microsoft has issued bans to players in the past for expressing their sexual preferences in Gamertags, but this is the first we've heard of profile info at the root cause of being kicked off Live.

Microsoft has gone on record in the past about its policy, saying that it's not limited to Gamertags of homosexual nature.

"Yes 'TheStraighterGamer' or 'TheHeterosexualgamer' would have gotten the same treatment and would have been found to be in violation and forced to be changed," wrote Microsoft reps following previous incidents.

Perhaps more alarming than someone being banned for their expression of sexual preference was how this particular gamer was treated by the gaming public.

Teresa tells the Consumerist "I was harassed by several players, 'chased' to different maps/games to get away from their harassment. They followed me into the games and told all the other players to turn me in because they didn't want to see that crap or their kids to see that crap."

Five minutes worth of interaction with the general Xbox Live population will get the point across—they don't care for "the gays." But does the policy go too far in one sense, not far enough in another?

I'm not surprised by this, when you have teenagers and stupid angry mid-20's men on Xbox Live, that's what you'll hear. Yet BANNING her for stating she was a Lesbian in her profile? That's just wrong.

I just don't understand that policy at all.

Sometimes I hate playing Halo 3 because all I hear is "That's gay," or the f word (the one that rhymes with maggot, not duck). Where is their ban? :-\

That's my thoughts exactly. Attacking someone else's sexual preference is ok, yet being open about yours, gets you banned.

I agree, there are worst case scenario than this by far. Yet they punish the innocent?? I think Microsoft is ran by sexist gay hating monkies.

Instead of focusing on hackers, cheaters, and people who alter games...they target on innocent homosexuals. :/

Microsoft needs a reality check.

?

This is so freaking stupid. Why does Microsoft ban people for saying their sexual orientation in their GT? Why can't they go ban the 6 year old who won't stop telling me to **** off instead?

That, and that. Pathetic MS, I have no real comment for this.

They are as good as commies, I reckon. Why the hell would they fuss about who the hell puts their sexual orinetation in their GT or profile. Their punishment is completely harsh and puts them as being homophobes and ptoentially sexist. At the least, if it is 'policy' as they so put forth, then they should have asked if she could have changed it to not display her sexual orientation. Going right out and banning her is utter pigheaded. Those people who hounded her across games should be the ones banned!

... because this is how I feel about them now...

*removed censor bypass -- sorry*

You know that's a good point. Why didn't they ask her first instead of just outright banning her?

:shame

I concur, they should have sent her a message, instead of banning her straight off the bat. Something seems fishy here. HellScyth brings up a good reason, but whoever decided to have that person banned instantly, must have seen something else.

She did claim that she was being harassed, right? What if those people who were harassing her were probably giving her bad rep votes that lead to the banning?

Hmm, I almost wonder if this was the only reason she was banned..
There may have been something else... or the one who banned is a fascist... and where's this I hear of those harassing her getting punished? It's against the rules to harass people across games on LIVE, regardless of the situation!
