Hi Everyone,

Is it unusual for a computer to run slow for a while then speed up,then slow, then fast?
I did a "Virus" check,I scanned with "Spybot",I also used "Disk Clean Up".Everything checked out ok,which is what confuses me.

God Bless,
KAZ

Hey Kaz, do you mean run slow as in your internet connection speed, or just in general? What exactly slows down and when does it usually happen?

Yes, you need to manage which of your Processes are running and taking more of the "Commit Charge" from your memory. I usually just close what ever is taking up more power, um running Virus check and all those things can slow down your computer. I usually actually turn off all virus and stuff equipment cause I hardly ever download anything.

Also occasionally running Flash or any other media type program can slow your computer down, but usually it is suggested to close all unused programs when you are not using them.

I find that the biggest problem is one minute,it's fine in it's entirety, then slow as a 3 legged turtle. The major thing is clicking on things such as the X to close,or any area that requires clicking on.For example, clicking the X to close a page, only to watch the circle that spins around behind the cursor forever before closing.I have pinned my Mozilla Firefox icon to the Start menu, because with some pages don't have the Home Icon,it's much easier to return to my Home Page.

One time I clicked on Firefox icon to return to my Home Page, and once again,I sat there and watched the little circle spin from what seemed to take forever.Out of frustration,I clicked on the icon 2 or 3 more times. After about 10 seconds it accepted the command, only to have 3 or 4 tabs show up on the bottom which you click to go to the Home Page.It almost seems if there is some sort of delay between clicks.

I'm not sure why.

Thanks for viewing.

Sounds like it could be a few possibilities.

From the description about the "circle that spins around behind the cursor" I'd assume you're running Vista, so how much RAM do you have? (Start -> Right-click Computer -> Properties or just Windows Key + Pause/Break on your keyboard) Should be listed under Installed memory (RAM): For Vista, you should be running at least 2GB for optimal performance, higher is almost always better.

If you are running 2+GB RAM, check how many processes are running (Right-click Taskbar -> Start Task Manager or Ctrl+Shift+Esc on your keyboard) and make sure that you either check "Show processes from all users" or click the button with similar text. Report that number here for us. One (or a few) of these processes could be causing issues and taking up more than its share of resources.

If that's not the culprit it could be an issue with your hard drive, though I'm guessing you have a SATA drive so it's not a software-related hard drive issue. Seems doubtful though.

To be honest, I'd have to guess it's the rogue process(es) option, which we can easily troubleshoot.
