Is the original XBOX still worth getting?

Hello, all,

Even with all the publicity surrounding the 360, I'm not crazy about dropping $400+ on a console yet, and the original is of course, much cheaper. Don't get me wrong..the 360 is tempting as hell to get and some awesome games I would love to play.  If I do get the original, which seems will be the course of action, I'm wondering if this is a good console to get used, especially on Ebay? I also hear that the Samsung drive is much better than the Thompson drive, which I'm assuming was in many of the first models released.

It also appears many of the big stores (Wal Mart, Target, Etc) never have the original in stock anymore. I don't know if this is a sign that the XBOX is being phased out and it's all 360 now, or there is still a demand for the original?  Yeah..I know I'm a few years late, but I've only had my own consoles for 4 years now, and just got a PS2  last year. Thanks for your thoughts in advance!

I would recommend going to a local gaming store with a good reputation and getting a refurbished or reconditioned xbox. At least this way, you'll get a unit that has been checked out wheras getting a used one from eBay is a crap shoot at best (pretty much a big gamble considering you'll have no way of knowing for sure if there are problems).

I believe that refurbished xboxes run right around the $100 mark now.

I'm in the market for one myself because I'd love to get in on some Halo 2 and Doom 3 action.

you can't rely on the xbox 360 to do justice to the old xbox games so go for it if you can get a good deal

I myself traded in my GC and all my games for an Xbox and a couple games on it. There are a ton of sweet games for the Xbox and most of them are around $20 or even $10-$15 used. It doesn't really compare with owning a next-gen system, but it's just as entertaining at a fraction of the cost.

However, about the samsung/thompson drive thing... I have the newer model (samsung I believe) and while the drive itself is supposedly more reliable, it does not read burnt discs. This is bad for two reasons: 1) If you're like me and you like to have custom soundtracks/a music library on your Xbox you have to upload the original cd onto your Xbox which for me is a bad thing because I have an iPod so all my readily available music is digital, and 2) the Xbox console has no way of getting track names off of the original cd, so that means you will have to manually input every name on every cd by navigating an on-screen keyboard. Trust me, it's not fun. For that alone I'd say the thompson drive would be worth the "risk of malfunction."

I thought that the Thompsons were the ones that went out in a blaze of glory?? Oh well. The older stuff is indeed just as entertaining and a fraction of the cost.

Thompsons are the worst ones. I know cause I have one. :lol

Of course I also got my xbox for free, so what am I complaining for?

You can fix this problem by hooking your X Box to a network and transferring files and re-arranging the hard drive as you please in order to boost your sound collection.

Not that it matters. Custom soundtracks were the most promising yet most underused feature ever.

Have you done this before? I have tried connecting it to my PC via router (I have done so successfully to play online via XBC) but I have never been able to transfer files from one to the other without "hacking" my Xbox, something I do not have sufficient knowledge to do. However, if you have done this before and could give me some step by step directions I'd gladly give it a try.

Yes. There's tons of great games for the XBOX, and most of them are quite cheap now.

I recommend Halo 2 (of course), Ninja Gaiden Black, and Dead or Alive Ultimate.

I may have to give in and get Halo 2. I'm just afraid that this game was so hyped up and nothing more.

I'm not a big Halo fan myself, I have to admit if you have a bunch of people playin its pretty awesome

I recommend Halo for the story, and Halo 2 for the multiplayer. It's better to play Halo first, though, IMO. Once you play Halo 2 with the dual wielding and different kind of shield, it feels weird to go back to Halo.
