Is The Wii The Next Gen Console To Bet On?

The past few months we have been bombarded with an influx of info on the three next generation consoles. All this info has left many of us asking the same question. Which one should I get? Or for some of us....which one should I get first?

I am a Sony fanboy. Have been for the better part of the past decade. I'm not that insane form of fanboy that completely boycotts other consoles but I am very pro Sony. I have been adamant about that fact.

I'll admit I've lost some of my love for Nintendo dating back to the time when they decided they didn't want to go to CD based games forcing Sony to break away and making their own CD based system, the PS1, blah, blah, blah, we know the story.

Let me take you back in time a little bit.

My second video game system behind the Atari 2600 was the original NES which I got from my uncle. I played many hours on that thing and had much love and enjoyment for it. The Snes never really got my attention much at that time, I was more into the Genesis.

With the N64 I really wasn't overly excited, especially with games costing upwards of $65. I enentually got one and enjoyed a handful of games but nothing near what I enjoyed on my PS1.

Then came the Gamecube which, again because of my personal disappointments with the previous consoles released by Nintendo, I wasn't really excited about at first. That is until i saw the Resident Evil Remake. Man when I saw that I had to get one. I bought the Cube for what I believe at the time was $150 and got the RE remake along with it, making it my first Cube game purchase and absolutely loved it. Then I started finding more and more great games and enjoying them too. I really started to fall in love with Nintendo all over again. For years I felt that they had left me behind with their kiddie games but the Cube, which I feel has many more quality titles that the N64, brought me back.

Now we come to next gen. I've said on a number of occasions that the PS3 would be my first next gen purchase. I'm a Sony fanboy after all. Now however I'm having second thoughts.

I'll admit the PS3 price really factors in heavily in my thoughts. I'm aware of the internal workings of the PS3 and why the costs are so high and I can appreciate it. But bottom line is I work but I don't make a major amount of money. Many games I get I get cheap. So money is a major factor in my decision making.

The main thing however that I think is really pissing me off about Sony is that they and Microsoft, with their 360, just feel like they need to get into this pissing contest about who's better, who's more powerful, whose got the best DVD playback, whose online service will be better, etc, etc. I'm really tired of it. These two companies I believe are trying to outdo each other in every facet of their systems that I really could care less about.

That's why right now I'd have to say my heart is leaning heavily on getting the Wii first, at launch, and just waiting on the other two systems to run their course. To me right now Nintendo is doing everything right. I believe they are finally getting back to their roots. Nothing fancy just here it is. Pop in a game and have "fun". Fun, yeah I forgot that that is what video games are supposed to be....FUN! The more I see and read about the Wii the more I want it at launch.

To me the Sony/MS rivalry is very high school. Two guys fighting over the same girl, trying to out macho each other. I believe that while they other are fighting it out trying to see who's got the bigger penis, Nintendo may just sneak in and steal the girl right from under their noses.

This generation, to this point Nintendo is doing everything right, pushing the right buttons, making the wiser decisions, and I believe this will be a resurgence and a return to dominance in the console race for Nintendo.

Time will tell of course but I believe that come launch day, whenever that ends up being, I'll be right there picking up my reserved Nintendo Wii and running home to swing my wiimote this way and that. Very Happy

Sorry for the long post, I'm not the kind of guy that usually talks this much but I just had to get this out. I'd like to hear feedback from others. Have you had these kind of thoughts too? What are your opinions?
 
Well from a price point the Wii is definitely the better way to go, at from what I hear the price has dropped to $150 for the system and will grab alot of attention from third party developers due to it's low development price and third party developers are what made Sony such a powerful contender in the console race in the past

not to mention that the wii's creative interface is definitely a step forward to the next generation, nicer graphics and more intense realistic gameplay are great but they haven't really changed the fundamental way we play games, I guess Nintendo is atoning for staying with the traditional cartridge system instead of taking the extra effort to develop a disk drive system on the N64

and some great games coming out for the wii in a wide variety of genre's, red steel, Zelda: twilight princess, Metroid Prime: Corruption, and some great party games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Wario Ware

So in all if you had to get one or had to get one first go for the Wii, it's going to be all the fun of the next generation without the penis waving or something.....you know what I mean

I have been very much interested in the Wii since the announcement of the Revolution, long before it was unveiled to be the oddity that it is today.

However, my history while it does have some resembelances of yours is not quite the same. I, for example, enjoyed the Nintendo 64 tremendously. It was truely the "fun machine" as described. Nothing can beat Nintendo 64 multiplayer. Never has, potentially never will. It also has to do with other conditions around that time. Regardless, the GCN was a solid system, but in my final view of things, it'll likely stand below the 64, or right along with it.

Regardless, I digress. Back to Wii. While I was not fully convinced, I had made the conscious decision that Nintendo would either do or do not at E3 2006, since I noticed they did next to nothing at 2005 (where I actually expected *some* information). And do they certainly did. I, along with many others, was most definitely convinced of the Wii's sustainability in both forms of gameplay, content, cost, and so forth. I can say that along with all the prior moves, some of which are considered quirky and odd, Nintendo has been forthsince making excellent decisions. Announcing the name "Wii" prior to the show and NOT AT the show was a marvel of intelligence, as it did have a purpose of allowing focus on the games at the show and not at the name as it were. The games are easy, fun, and intuitive. A blast to play.

All of this combined with Nintendo's earlier iteration of this ideology - the Nintendo DS - making record sales in record time and absolutely dominating the sales charts both in hardware that numbers up to 5X that of the second leader and generally more than all sales combined in hardware and software that often numbers more than 5 per top 10, not to mention the four titles that are reaching 3 million units status. It's insane. All of this coming on the heels of years of industry analysis stating that the Japanese market is shrinking, shrinking, shrinking.. now we have multi platinum hits and record hardware sales..? Indeed... If this prior iteration of the aforementioned ideology is any indiction - Wii will trample Japan.

The Wii is easy and fun and it sounds like that's exactly what you're after. From reading your post, I think you're really going to enjoy what this system has to offer when it comes around to your town. :-)
 
Personally, I don't think it's the one to bet on. But I also think that if you do bet on it then you still have a good chance of winning. I dont think it's going to get last place in the console wars this time around, but I don't think it will come in first either. In other words, it will be a solid choice but other systems might have better games depending on what you like and if the controller is something you can actually enjoy using.
 
Excellent post Tommy! Very well written and thought out...I especially like the analogy of Sony and Microsoft bickering over things that don't really matter to a lot of gamers (me included).

As far as I'm concerned the PS3 and 360 are just more expensive versions of the previous generations hardware...the Wii is something new and different.

Exactly. Hey graphics are great but when people overemphasize them they end up underemphasizing gameplay and that is just as important if not more important than the graphics. Give me a game that may be slightly inferior graphically but is superb in the gameplay and I'll be more than happy and satisfied with it. :D
 
I would bet on Nintendo. I admit I'm a Nintendo fanboy, but I still play the other systems. Basically it comes down to gameplay. If its fun, I'll play it.

And of course, with Nintendo having the best priced console, it'll definately be my first consideration. Along with a different interface that still supports older games, what do you have to lose?

Basically, the advanced graphics and such are nice, but games are supposed to be fun, not just pretty to look at.

And why do systems feel they need to be able to play video games and DVDs and store pictures and music and all that?
 
I live for the PS2 and sadly, I realize the Wii is totally gonna own the 360 and PS3. The PS3 will be way too much money-the games to cost up to $75. The 360 has graphics but that's about it. The Wii has the innovation and characters most gamers have grown up with. I can't wait to see the new Zelda game! I, personally will be aving up for the Wii and the PS3, but the Wii will come first-Sorry Sony!!
 
Are we talking about when all the systems launch? Or after theyve been out for awhile?

I think the major advantage Nintendo has is the price at launch. Although, considering that thousands or millions of people have no issues forking out $400+ for the 360, this will leave the the other two (PS3 at least) behind. But after prices drop, will there be a sudden demand for the 360 or PS3 versus the Wii?

I beg to differ. This is why I'm hoping to drop at least a thousand in Nintendo stock soon as I'm capable.
 
It would appear it's going to sell alot of products with the new technology and everything,but I wouldnt spend that much on it's stock.
I currently own a share of Microsoft,but Im probably going to sell it very soon because of the competition it will face

Considering the price of the stock, the only way to see a sizable return would be to put more in it. Taking into account recent DS related rises, I believe these DS sales will only continue to raise the numerical value and Wii will only add to this.

Sony recently plummeted and I don't particularly concern my self with them. When I bet on Sony or Microsoft, I'm betting on overall performance of so many sectors.. whereas Nintendo I can wager exactly what they're after this quarter/year - games.

Because you dont buy shares to break even,it's pointless.And buying the two stocks is like betting on both teams to win in a baseball game.It does matter how much you spend on which one,but buying a share of both is a good indication that you're not too sure on who to invest in,so I doubt you would invest alot more in one than the other.So that's why we're not investing in two companies who are competing with each other
 
Wii will be the supreme being of all videogame consoles....now I bid you ado........... :af
 
Well, thanks for explaining the stock thing to me. I never did understand that stuff so I tend to stay away from it.
 
I don't know much either.I just know what philosophies are the wisest ones


I think the Wii will be the best of the three because of it's poor competition.Nintendo has always had better games,and more of them.The PS3 and 360 will have one great game foe online play,and maybe a couple other nice games,but Nintendo will have at least 10 great games,and even some for online play.The Wii's controller could be the only thing that stands in it's way,but I dont see Sony or Microsoft even touching Nintendo this time around
