Just got around to reading your post and I will say thank you. It's good to finally her some information on the Internet that isn't total bs spewing from a moronic mouth. I ASSumed that windows had orphaned vista due to launching a new ( or different) os so soon after a major release. My experience with vista on my personal computer was an early hp with dual core amd ( earlier one) and it had 2gb ram and integrated video. I had been so used to xp and 98 (I still don't like visual effects on my operating systems! But I understand that in the world we live in today you have to be markatable and give stuff pizzaz) that I HATED it. After fooling around with it at work on decent desktops and laptops, it's actually kind of cool. With all the beta releases, rc and rtm stuff for seven, I think the early stage teething problems that vista had ( not saying it was entirely microsofts fault) in it's early stages will be zero to none.

My computer and my girlfriend's computer both came with Vista home basic. I really hate the user account control security settings. That was the primary reason I went back to a more familiar XP Professional for my current setup.
However, the fact that Vista supports DirectX 10 and I now have some games that use DirectX 10 makes me wonder.
In addition to that, I saw someone making use of what I think were Aero settings last week. Though I usually minimize visual effects, use of transparency and shifting windows in a 3D type interface can be advantageous. I could be mistaken though. It may have been Windows 7.

Plus, Vista always seemed bulky and slow to me, not only on my girlfriend's laptop, but on this desktop when it was installed.
If Windows 7 is what it is cracked up to be (DirectX 11 support, less bulky, but with positive additions of Vista) then it is worth installing for a demo at least!

As far as UAC goes, I believe it was added to keep those non-savvy PC users from unintentionally installing stuff, which would keep virii from spreading. Is it annoying? Yes. But since you can turn it off, I honestly think it's not worth complaining about or even dismissing an entire operating system just because of it.

Did you get the actual retail version or the RC? If you don't have the full retail then I suggest putting on hold re-downloading everything. Saves you the headache of having to do it all over again when you get the full version. You should just download the programs that you really need.
That is unless you've installed it on a separate partition.

Gaming HAD to take a back seat because just doing regular tasks on Vista was messed up. Windows first and foremost is an Enterprise OS. So many companies use Windows to run their business that MS has to take care of them first. And like the article mentioned, Windows 7 is a better running Vista as they share most of the same code so there wouldn't be much difference. Plus, it was not the OS that made games better it's the API and SDK's, in other words DirectX.
I would have to agree that the overall OS be taken care of first before they start taking care of gamers.

The tray and play concept doesn't really appeal to me. Games simply run faster off an internal hard drive than they do from optical media.
