Kid wanted a DS for his birthday, got a ROCK in a box instead!

Segatron Genesis... call me the wizard.
All I got was a rock.

A 16-year-old unboxed his birthday present DS to find nothing but rocks and Chinese newspaper.

Because she's a cool mom, Jody Wykle, of Lake Wales, Fla., gave her son Guitar Hero: On Tour even though he didn't have a DS, just so she could make the guy squirm while she played clueless. Then, surprise! She handed over the DS - a sealed box, mind you - and when he opened it, things got unintentionally a lot worse.

"When he opened it, he was like, 'A box of rocks?'" Wykle told WTSP-TV. "He said, 'Mom, that ain't a joke.'"

Indeedy not, especially for a $138 handheld. She went back to Walmart, which gave her the not-our-problem treatment - until Ms. Wykle called in the media, at which point it became very much their problem. They refunded the DS and shelled out a gift card.

Before getting the refund, Wykle bought a second DS, just so her son could have a proper birthday present. "I made them open it while I was there to make sure there was a DS in it," she told WTSP.

Here's the kicker: Seems that box of rocks had been returned before.

Wouldn't surprise me that Wal-Mart would do that :lol

that's interesting......i heard a similar story with a ps3 and a wii before :lol and every time is as shocking and sad as the first one

riiiiiiigggghht... >_>

"May I have your attention shoppers, we are currently having a huge discount sale on various rocks we found out back in ail 12. Stocks are limited, so be sure to bring your idiocy badge and a pen to sign the waver stating that we don't have to take back the faulty appliance. Thank you."

Kids these day you know back when I was a kid all we had to play with was rocks and sticks and we considered our ourselves lucky too.
Come on somebody had to say it. :D

At our Wal-Mart the courtesy desk calls someone from electronics to check returns before they will take it.

See, this is what I want more and more Wal-Marts across the nation to do. There are so many lacking in this department, I've seen and heard many sad stories, about people abusing their inventory system by returning damaged or even new items for full cash/credit.

Here's a bad one I've experienced in the past a few times. A man trades in games at my store, wishes to receives cash. However, the amount in cash does not please him, so he takes the credit instead, and uses that credit to purchase a new Xbox 360 controller from us. He informs us, that he will take the unopened product back to Wal-Mart for cash and lie to them about not having his receipt.

So, why are some Wal-Mart not checking for receipts or even allowing such an act?

I do that all the time. :lol

Here's another article on it:
Jodi Wykle knew her son would be thrilled when she gave him a new Nintendo DS for his birthday.

Instead, he was rocked.

According to WTSP-TV, the confused teen opened up his gift only to find bunch of stones and a rolled up Chinese newspaper in place of the popular handheld.

All I got was a rock.

Needless to say, mom was equally stunned.

"When he opened it, he was pulling the seal off, my sister-in-law carries a pocket knife and she opened it and that's when he pulled it out and it was Chinese newspaper and a bunch of rocks," she explained.

The troubling discovery prompted the Florida woman to contact the local Wal-Mart where she bought the curious box and complain, but reportedly workers there told her it wasn't their problem and that she should contact Nintendo instead. Of course, Nintendo told her roughly the same thing, leaving mother and son with a $138 box of rocks.

"They don't want to do nothing. They want me to keep the box of rocks. I'm not buying a box of rocks for $138," she said.

Amazingly enough, however, Wal-Mart soon caved after learning that the same box of rocks had been previously returned by another disgruntled customer. How exactly it made it back onto store shelves remains a mystery, but for her troubles, Wykle was given a full refund and a $20 gift card.

It's not the first time Wal-Mart has gotten into hot water for selling a questionable handheld. Earlier this month, a PSP system bought at a different Wal-Mart store in Florida was found to contain a memory stick filled with pornographic images.

Lol, I remember doing that one time with a copy of Perfect Dark Zero way back when the 360 was first released, and someone had bumped my cousin's console while it was spinning (prolly the dog) and made circle rings in it. Took it up to Walmart saying it was a birthday gift sent to us without a receipt and they gave us money back for it.

I remember that. Aleeock proved it, it's really no surprise. Also, I've seen a few Best Buy stores do this as well.

Example, someone buys a Guitar Hero set with Guitar and Game at a discount, since he was an employee. He takes his broken guitar and places it IN the box. He replaces the faceplate on the guitar with the new one to disguise it. Best Buy falls for it and redeems his cash. Now, the ironic part? He does this at his own job!

You can do three returns a year without a receipt.

So basically, the return policy is about as accurate as say, Robin Williams as the Genie? :lol 3 wishes only? That's kind of awkward to me. Yet, how do they keep track of which customer is who?

When you do a return without a receipt, they take your license number down in the computer. So if you try a fourth time, it flags in the system that you've already done 3 returns without receipts.

Great! I like that idea :) They should really enforce that to some of the "Missing Link" Wal-marts in back watered Texas :lol

Well the problem is that the policy is not corporate wide. I mean all the stores do it, but basically, the ID is not in the computer for every store. So if you've done 3 receiptless returns in one store, you can still go to another store in another city and do it. Or at least I think so.
