How hard would it be to replace my laptop's hard drive, and what would be the easiest way to transfer files?

Depends. If I remember correctly, laptops from big name brands like Dell and HP make it a bit harder because they want you to go through them to replace it. Still very feasible though.

Usually, most retail 2.5" hard drives come with data transfer components, like cables and software. So it shouldn't be too difficult. Just read your manual and look for the spot that contains the hard drive.

You might also look up the specifications of your current drive. Many consumer laptops still come with 5,400 RPM drives. If you upgrade to a larger hard drive, you can also upgrade the speed to 7,200 RPM.

If you only have a few files you need to move, CD-R or DVD+/-R media would be options, as would usb flash drives.

I usually use cloning software like Acronis True Image to image the old drive over to the new drive. The method I use takes both drives being plugged into a desktop at the same time though.

That's true too, but it might have an impact on his battery life and/or produce a little more heat. Just for durability sake, I would say he stick to 5400RPM drives. They're also generally cheaper.

That being said, even if not upgrading the spindle speed, getting a drive with a larger cache can also result in a performance increase. Many aftermarket laptop drives are available with 16 MB caches over the 8 MB cache that many laptop drives include.
