Halo 3 will probably win a lot of GOTY's because its really popular, but for something like an editor's choice award, I think Mass Effect might actually win. Halo 3 probably won't win many of the editor's choice awards, just because it really doesn't look like its changed much sine Halo 2, and I think that factor alone may put it out of contention there.

EDIT: Plus, Halo 2 didn't ompletely sweep the GOTY's either...

If Halo 3 gets Game of the Year over Mass Effect or Bioshock, I'm going to denounce technology and move to the country.

Halo 3 will. Its a fact.
I think that's a bit presumptuous. Halo 2 didn't exactly sweep the GOTY's, and there's gonna be a lot of competition this year. Halo 3 will be a contender of course, but considering the game isn't even out yet, and that this year is loaded with great titles, Halo 3 may not win.

What competition?

There's a lot of games that might be worthy of GOTY.

360 - Bioshock, Mass Effect, Eternal Sonata
Wii - Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxies, SSBB
PS3 - Lair, Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm
PS2 - Odin Sphere (it got a lot of Game of the Month in the magazines), God of War II

Re: MASS EFFECT IN NOVEMBER???? ME ANGRY!!!!!!!!

Halo 3 will win. I mean, God of War 2 didn't change much from the first one at all and was still an amazing game. I believe if Halo 3 just goes on with the story, it'll do great.

Exactly. Plus, there's Assassin's Creed, Crysis, GTA IV, and others. Plus, no one has even played half the games that could end up being GOTY contenders. Just saying, its not gonna be a default victory for Halo 3.

Re: MASS EFFECT IN NOVEMBER???? ME ANGRY!!!!!!!!

Brawl is the only game that can stand up to it, and even then, nobody really knows how it plays. The reason I am so confident, is because of the Halo 3 beta. We now know it had almost none of the new features the full game will have, yet it was still insanely well-received and popular.

I think more than Brawl can. Brawl isn't a GOTY kind of game. Its a game that will be insanely popular, and, while being well received by critics, has never gotten the ratings necessary to get GOTY's.

Also, the Halo 3 Beta was hardly well-received. There were tons of complaints around it (probably because no one understands what the word "beta" means, but still...). Halo 3 will almost undoubtedly outsell every game this year (except maybe GTA IV or Brawl), but popularity=/= game of the year. It certainly helps, but the best-selling game isn't the always the GOTY. You're probably right that if it comes down to fan voting, Halo 3 will win quite a few GOTY's, but many sites use editor's choice instead of popular vote, and in those cases, we may see Halo 3 lose.

I think all of this is a tad presumptuous. Basically all the games we're mentioning for GOTY aren't even out yet...

Re: MASS EFFECT IN NOVEMBER???? ME ANGRY!!!!!!!!

Halo 3 beta was more loved than hated...of course there's people who just want to hate it cause it's popular but oh well.

No, about Mass Effect. How long is this game supposed to be?

Idk. No one does exactly, but I've head estimates (some of them from devs or mods on their forums) between 40 hours and 70 hours.

I think its more because people can't figure out that its a beta version of the game, and they expect it to be perfect, so they get pissed when the graphics aren't up to par or there's some lag.

Re: MASS EFFECT IN NOVEMBER???? ME ANGRY!!!!!!!!

40 - 70 hours sounds awesome..hopefully that's just the main story, and there'll be a ton of other stuff you can do as well...who knows. :)

Actually, they say main story will be about 30 hours, and they have a bunch of other planets and areas to explore, which will take 40 hours, at most. So basically, it depends how you play. If you skipped dialog, forgot about sidequests, and never talked to your party, you could probably finish in under 30 hours, but if you take time to do everything, it could take quite a while...

DToid unimpressed with Mass Effect

Watching the first 20 minutes of Mass Effect played by a cute BioWare representative, I couldn't help but be reminded of a ventriloquist I saw on America's Got Talent a few nights ago. Why I happened to be watching America's Got Talent is none of your business, but let it be known that I wasn't happy about it.

Now, the thing about Mass Effect is that it seemed, more or less, like a ventriloquist's dummy. Of course, it was a very nice-modeled, well-rendered dummy with nice textures, but nothing more. The game, much like Pinocchio, lacks life.

The gameplay looks like your standard FPS fare, which is to say that I didn't see anything great or remarkable. There's a variety of weapons and abilities to use, but my pants didn't get wet or tight because of them. Gameplay is kind of hard to judge without an actual controller in your hands, so I'm going to reserve judgment on that.

Where the presentation really fell short, however, is in the emotionless voice acting and subpar facial animations. Not only did the conversation lack the natural ebb and flow to which we were all looking forward, but it was as if the voice actor's took commas, question marks, and exclamations points out of their repertoire. The dialogue has about as much emotional engagement as a grocery list. Even worse, the facial animations match the shoddy voice acting: the mouths move, and that's about it. It'd be great for a Joan Rivers botox sim, but it doesn't really make for a compelling video game.

At worst, Mass Effect is disappointing. The best reaction I've heard all day was this: "It wasn't that bad, just more of the same." If "not that bad" is all you've got going for you ...
Ho hum.

hm.............they think its only good graphically!

why!?

Re: DToid unimpressed with Mass Effect

Interesting. I think it will be a great game still, but who knows. Smoke and mirrors (read: hype) can sell a bad game.

Re: DToid unimpressed with Mass Effect

Yeah, I'll trust all the other sites out there that were really impressed with it, rather than some random site I've never heard of. At GDC, they showed the entire first planet of the game, which was about an hour (its basically the prologue), and the critic's reaction was quite good. I'm still picking this one up, and I still think it will be awesome.

Re: DToid unimpressed with Mass Effect

I definitly trust destructoid, they've been featured on G4 and other networks, and IGN gets some of their news from them.

they are not a little no name place

Re: DToid unimpressed with Mass Effect

www.destructoid.com

but lets not talk about dtoid

lets talk about mass effect, and why its apparently not good

@cherry, i think those people were impressed with the visuals
