Microsoft confirms Xbox 360 Elite $299.99 on August 28th.

Segatron Genesis... call me the wizard.
Bye bye $399!

As if there were any point denying it, Microsoft confirmed the Xbox 360 price drops today. Starting tomorrow, the Xbox 360 Elite model will be priced at $299.99, and the Pro is being phased out. It has already halted production, and will be priced at $249.99 until stock is cleared. The Arcade is remaining at $199.99. The new Elite model will no longer ship with an HDMI cable, so those who want to use that connection will have to pick one up themselves.

Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg said the price drop is due to lowered production costs, and said they eliminated the Pro to make the choice between console SKUs easier for consumers. He also credited this coming alongside Sony's PlayStation 3 price drop as a coincidence. "This has been in the works for months and months," he said. "I think it's a bit coincidental, but it's also somewhat logical... because we are turning the corner of the holiday season." He also took the opportunity to deny a "Slim" console, and pointed out that the Xbox 360 is "not even at the halfway point" of its lifespan.

The news wasn't as rosy across the pond. CVG reports that in Europe, the Arcade unit's price has been adjusted in the other direction. While it was 129.99 euros (about $210), it's being raised to 159.99 euros (about $260). Microsoft said it was to "offset exchange rate fluctuations and changes in local market."
